Max and Fenir
(Max's POV)
I had never thought about how difficult it was to live without my sight. I'd grown used to it over the years. I'd begun to use my other senses, my scent and hearing especially. I deciphered heartbeats, footsteps, scents, everything. So when I heard Fenir burst into the kitchen and yell, "Max, I found out how!" I had no idea what he was talking about.
I twisted toward his ragged breathing. "What are you talking about, Fenir?" I asked in exasperation. "I'm trying to cook."
"Forget cooking, Max, I know how to get your sight back!"
I froze, then narrowed my eyes. "Don't. Don't get my hopes up, you know there's no-"
"Yes, there is a way!" he exclaimed. "Mariposa's daughter-She lives-Her powers-She has her mother's powers! She can give your sight back and she said she'd do it without a price."
Of course, my first reaction was excitement and hope. Could she really help me? But then reality sunk in and I shook my head slowly. "Fenir, Mariposa would kill her and she knows it. She wouldn't risk her neck to help me."
"She would, she swore on the Goddess that she would and you know how seriously she takes her oaths. Max, please, please, just come with me to see her."
"...Okay," I whispered, hardly daring to let hope lift its head and stir in my gut. Fenir moved forward and caught my hands and I felt the familiar pull of a portal taking us somewhere. There was a hardwood porch under my shoes then and Fenir knocked on a door. I heard it open and a woman's voice said, "Fenir, Max, come in." Then Fenir led me inside and we turned a few corners before sitting on a soft couch.
"Can you give him his sight back?" Fenir asked in a whisper. "Mariposa-she-her-"
"Her spells are strong, Ailena," I said quietly. "I don't know if you can."
"I'm just as strong as she, if not more so," Ailena said and then a hand covered my eyes. I felt an unfamilar presence in my mind and started to shove it out, then paused. The presence was warm and radiated a soft glow. I could tell it was Ailena and forced myself to relax. There was a sharp jolt of pain and I let out a whimper, feeling Fenir's hand squeeze my knee.
Ailena's hand withdrew from my closed eyes and I didn't move, trying not to get my spirits up.
"Max, open your eyes," Fenir whispered and I did. The first thing I saw was a pair of vibrant green eyes with cat-slitted pupils, shot through with other colors and glistening with unshead tears and hope. "Max?"
"Fenir," I gasped and threw my arms around his neck. "Oh, Fenir, Fenir." I clung to him, putting my hands on his cheeks and pulling back to look at him. Tears were silently streaking down his cheeks and I felt them start rolling down my own face. "Fenir, I see you," I whispered and kissed him heatedly. I heard Ailena leave the room on nearly silent feet as Fenir responded with even more passion, holding me close. I forced myself to pull away. "T-thank you, Ailena!" I called, not caring if she thought I'd be indebted to her. I already was.
Fenir held me tightly still and we suddenly appeared in a strange bed, a room decorated almost identical to how it had been in our old house farther north. "Max, Max, oh my Max," he kept repeating, clutching me to his chest. I just stared at him, both of us still crying. I slowly moved and pressed my lips to his, kissing him slowly and gently. He kissed me back with soft intensity until I finally rolled so I was straddling his waist. I drew back only to tear his shirt off--literally--and he did the same to mine before fumbling for the button of my jeans with a loud swear. I reached down and undid them for him, then his own. He impatiently kicked his pants and boxers off as I slid out of mine.
"Fenir, I love you so much," I said softly. "You were the first thing I saw and the last thing I ever want to see."
"I love you too, Max. I love you too. More than you could ever know."
