2023 El wrote in her notebook. Nearly two years ago she had escaped the lab where she was found and adopted my Chief Jim Hopper. Her dad now. She had gone from a buzz cut to now hair almost to her shoulders but not quite. She had no friends, it was her second year in school, and she had just turned 15. The bell went off and she jumped.
"Jumpy freak..." a boy near her mumbled. El ignored him. He was a prime example of why she didn't want friends. She also didn't really talk which was another reason friends weren't something she really had. The only time anyone really talked to her was in the halls. Girls made fun of her and so did boys... if they weren't trying to flirt with her because she was pretty. A lot of people didn't like her because her father was an officer and they didn't like how she was so quiet.
All the desks were connected with one other so everyone sat in partners. But not next to El. No one wanted to sit by her. Everyone sat in the same spot everyday by habit. The class door opened and a girl came in. A new girl that caught everyone's eye she was so stunning. Short blonde hair, blue eyes, and just a gorgeous everything but dressed in all dark. El caught herself staring and quickly looked away as the girl sat next to her and plopped her stuff down.
"Is it cool if I sit here?" the girl said.
"Yeah." El said.
"I'm Baylee." the girl said and held her hand out.
"Eleanor." El said and shook her hand.
"Hey, you don't want to sit by her she's a total freak." a boy leaned forward and said. Baylee turned and looked at him. He was quite unattractive.
"She's not the one lookin' like a freakshow." Baylee said and turned back around in her seat. She saw El smiling.
"Are you group A or B?" Baylee asked.
"A." El said.
"Sweet, me too. Since we have the same schedule... think you could show me around for today?" Baylee asked.
"I'd love to." El grinned.
"I'll leave you alone at lunch time so you can sit with your friends, I don't want to annoy you too bad." Baylee laughed.
"No please! I don't have any friends. You couldn't annoy me if you tried." El smiled.
"You wanna bet." Baylee flashed a grin and El felt butterflies and she didn't know why. El shot her a grin back.
The teacher came in and addressed the class and began teaching. Baylee watched as El tuned in taking notes and listening. She had to be a straight A student Baylee thought.
Baylee took her pencil out and stuck the eraser part in El's ear. El jolted away than laughed.
Not too long after Baylee drew a smiley face in the corner of El's paper. El grinned and drew back on Baylee's.
El went back to taking notes. Baylee pulled out a red marker and drew a rose on her own paper.
"You're really good." El said a little stunned at how good it really was.
"Thanks." Baylee said. She took El's arm and drew a little heart on it and El drew on her in the same spot, a little heart.
"What are you doing after school?" Baylee asked. Keep in mind they were whispering.
"Probably nothing. Why?" El said.
"I dunno, maybe we could go to the arcade than get dinner." Baylee said.
"I'll have to talk to my dad." El said. Baylee suddenly took note of the band aid on El's wrist.
"What happened to your arm?" Baylee asked.
"I-it's nothing." El said. Baylee lifted her brows than let it go and they laughed a little. When class was over they went on and when it was all done they headed over to the bathrooms before lunch.
"I'm surprised you haven't gotten sick of me." El said.
"I don't think I could. You're sorta awesome." Baylee laughed. El laughed.
"You're the first person to ever tell me that." El grinned.
"How? Like you're drop dead gorgeous I'm surprised you're not one of the rude popular girls." Baylee said.
"No you're gorgeous. I'm just... me." El sighed. They made it to the bathroom. Baylee held the door open.
"After you." Baylee said.
"Why thank you." El laughed and so did Baylee. The door shut behind them and El froze after the lights flashed a second. A normal thing actually.
"Hey... hey what's wrong?" Baylee asked. Shit... flashback. El thought.
"N-nothing." El lied.
"Um cleary there's something, Eleanor what's wrong?" Baylee asked. She gently held El by both her arms.
"No it's ok. I'm ok." El said her eyes were a little teary. Baylee pulled her into a hug which she returned.
"I don't know what's up... but whatever it is, you've got it." Baylee said.
"You have to promise me... promise me you won't say I'm crazy." El said looking Baylee in the eyes.
"Trust me, you're not the only one full of surprises." Baylee said.
"Wh- what does that mean?" El said.
"You go first. I'll go second." Baylee said.
"I am the girl from Hawkins Lab." El said. Baylee looked a bit shocked but quickly got over it.
"Ok... well I'm the alley girl from the news." Baylee said. El gasped.
El wasn't one to watch the news. Well really no one did but adults. A while ago on the news it showed a girl on the news in the alley way who could lift anything, super strength, who could move in a flash, superspeed, and who could fly.
"Wait can you prove it?" El said.
"You've got to prove yours too." Baylee said.
"Deal." El said. They shook on it than Baylee came a few feet off the floor still holding El's hand. Baylee held out her other hand and El took it and she too was off the ground.
"W-whoa." El said.
"Crazy huh?" Baylee said.
"Not crazy. Awesome." El smiled. Baylee lowered them.
"Ok your turn." Baylee said. El held out her hand and pulled Baylee closer to her. Baylee grinned.
"It's so relieving to not be... alone you know?" El said.
"My parents moved here to keep me away from other people like me. But I never liked anyone in the way I like you. I feel like I could tell you anything." Baylee admitted.
"I feel like I could tell you everything." El said.
Baylee grinned and they headed out to go to lunch.
