Ken Kaneki walked through the halls of the high school, one hand in the pocket of his black dress pants and the other carrying a small black binder containing lesson plans and roll call.
Just two days ago he was sitting in the observation deck with the other teachers, looking for the potential in this year's applicants. What he saw truly amazed him.
Quirks always intrigued Kaneki, for he had been born without one, quirkless, the kids at school used to tease him, but ever since that fateful date with Rize he hadn't needed one.
Himself and Hinami were simply to grade the ghouls entrance exams while the hero course teachers watched the practical exam, but he couldn't help but watch the amazing talents at work.
Snapping out of his stuppor he looked up and saw the tall, heavy quinque steel door. The doors to the other classrooms were just as large but we're not made of such steel, or any steel at all for that matter, just wood. Kaneki noted the small detail, signaling that the staff was still worried one of the ghoul students might go on a rampage.
Kaneki pulled open the heavy door and entered his classroom. The students wouldn't start ariving for another thirty minutes at the most, so Kaneki had some time to kill. He walked up to the black board and picked up a new piece of chalk.
Mr. Kaneki
He scrawled on the board, along with the date and the things they would be covering in the first half of the day such as English literature, classic Japanese, math, and science. The rest of the lessons would be covered after the lunch break.
Kaneki poured over his lessons one last time as the first couple students began to filter in. As it grew closer and closer to the first bell the later stragglers sauntered into the classroom.
While the other classes had fifteen to twenty students, Kaneki's only had five. Probably a 'just in case' defense for the first trial year, but still kind of disappointing.
"Good morning class, " Kaneki stood, addressing his students, "my name is Kaneki Ken and I will be your teacher for the year."
With that said Kaneki scoped up his binder and flipped it open to the roll call page. There were five students in the room, he didn't have to but he wanted it to be a real school experience for these boys and girls that had never been to school in their life.
"Madoka, Akari, " was the first name he called out. The girl lifted her hand hesitantly, only making it half-way in the air. She had pretty blonde hair that hung in princess curls all the way down to the small of her back. Freckles splashed her face and she wore a light pink eyeshadow and the slightest hint at a thin layer beige lipgloss.
Kaneki had seen the girl a couple of times. She was always with her mother or brother walking around the library or book store, she had even read inside of :re, the coffee shop his wife, Touka, owns, a couple of times.
Kaneki marked her present and continued with the next name. "Yagari, Hatsu." the brown haired boy looked tired and bored as he slowly raised his hand up, head held in the other as he gazed out the window.
Yagari was always with a group of three or four, who were usually at the skatepark or just walking around, laughing and shoving each other. He acted like a normal teenage boy, the only thing indicating him a ghoul was the G sewn to the front of all his shirts.
That was another thing that separates ghouls from humans. Like all those years a ago, when the Jewish were segregated and had to have a Star of David sewn to their clothing so must ghouls and humans. Humans are indicated with a large H and ghouls with a large G.
Kaneki marked him present and moved on to the next name. "Gaichi, Atsuo."
The strawberry blonde boy was sitting diagonally from Madoka. He was playing with and picking at his nails to distract himself, only breaking his concentration from it to raise his hand.
He was a strange boy, always doing the wirdest things with his time, but overall an artistic kid. Although Kaneki may or may not have caught him tagging once or twice.
"Ryunosuke, Haruka." the short petite girl was sitting towards the back, behind Yagari. Her black hair was separated into two high buns. She was wearing rings, bangle bracelets, and necklaces with a dragonfly clip to hold back her dark bangs that fell out of the buns. She had piercings lining her ears and she wore winged eyeliner and bright eyeshadow that exentuated her upturned eyes that hid behind glasses.
Her hand shot up in the air when her name was called. Ryunosuke was a hyper and excited girl, and a very smart one at that. When Kaneki graded her exam she got a near perfect score. She was always bouncing around from place to place and never really hung out with any specific group of friends.
"Natsuo, Nishka." was the final name that Kaneki called out. She was sitting next to Madoka. She had short brown hair pulled back into two low buns. She wasn't a childish girl, far from it in fact, yet she was the only girl who was not wearing make-up. Natsuo was engrossed in a book as she lifted her hand into the air.
With everyone there and accounted for Kaneki began by saying, "So, does anyone prefer to be called by their first name?" he asked the question that hardly anyone had the guts to ask.
Madoka, Natsuo, and Ryunosuke all raised their hands. "It's nice to formally meet you all, we will accomplish great things here, " he said calmly, trying to grasp their full attention, "but for now, " he turned topics sharply, "the English lesson!"
With that, the first day of the first year of complete ghoul integration began.
