Accidents Happen
2015 A.D
Lacey turned over and slowly let her eyes flutter open. Once again, even in the shadows of the night, Matthew's back was turned towards her. He was simply dormant, his body couldn't possibly be working with his mind right now. She sighed, it was only a few days ago when their honeymoon had ended in Greece.
They'd seen a lot though she hadn't had all the fun she'd imagined she would. She had dreamed that they'd go to museums and look at Greek artefacts, visit some heritage sites and somehow find their lips locked in very passing time.
It was great, wonderful in fact the problem was that it had all happened in her head. Reality was another story. Matthew was quiet, it was impossible to be engaged in an ongoing conversation with him. She'd also gotten into the habit of calling him Ryder like everyone else did, everyone who wasn't her family that is. She would occasionally call him Matthew she had been used to it after all.
Lacey sat up on the bed and rested her back on the head board, she looked over towards the large window that over looked the great suburban town they were resided in. It was truly beautiful, the stars of the night sky looked phenomenal, the luminescent waxing crescent moon hanging high amongst the stars stealing all the attention away. The city lights ridding of the darkness, colours of all sorts shining though.
It was all she could ever ask for. Having to spend all this time and the rest of her life with the one man she truly loved with all her heart.
Her husband.
Her heart.
Ryder...
A faint buzzing noise interrupted the silence and she looked over to the beside table to see that she was receiving a call. It was followed by the light chiming of melodic bells. Lacey leant over and picked up the phone.
It was one of the latest of technologies her mother had insisted she have it. She believed that it'd somehow help land her a better modelling contract, or something like that.
Lacey had learnt that the only way to get her mother to shut up was to do as she says and get it over with.
It always worked with Katherine.
She looked over the caller ID and saw a familiar person's name. What could it be she asked her self, it was late at night or maybe early in the morning she couldn't see the small font due to the blinding light the screen was giving of. Lacey tapped the green answer icon on the screen and pulled the phone towards her ear.
"Hello Madeline," she spoke gently into the phone greeting her older sister. Her voice hoarse for she hadn't spoken since she said good night to the one man who held her heart."Lacey, thank goodness you answered!" Madeline, who on the other hand sounded frantic.
She sounded worried, scared, horrified.
This caused a frown to make an appearance in Lacey's face. Had something happened at home that she hadn't known about? She cleared her throat readying her self to speak once again. Though she hadn't gotten the chance to.
"L-Lacey, it's Dan. He's in hospital." Madeline said through the line.
Madeline sat on a surprisingly comfortable hospital chair, waiting for Dan to wake up, hoping to see him. Though she wasn't family. She just waited in the waiting area with everyone else. So she couldn't sit by his hospital bed and virtually see that he's very much alive. She'd rooted for him and still was, along with Bentley, Madeline had loved him. She didn't want anything more than he and Lacey being paired together for all eternity.
They'd be siblings, actual family. More than they were, he'd truly make her younger sister happy.
Then there was Matthew...
Or Ryder as some people would call him.
"What happened! Is he okay?" Lacey said through the line, something had happened. Her best friend had ended up in a hospital.
"I don't know, they won't let me see him. It's that serious," she stood onto her feet and walked towards a nearby water dispenser. She had already grew thirsty during the conversation, her tongue had slowly grew dry.
Lacey scooted over to the edge of the bed, flipped the duvet over and let the slightly cool air envelope her two limbs. It was great feeling but she didn't have time to think about how great the air conditioners were, Dan was hospitalised and she needed to know what happened.
"What happened?" She asked again, Madeline had ignored her question before but she needed to know.
"Car accident, there was a drunk driver, a truck and him." Madeline looked around the vacant waiting area. It turned out that not many stayed for their loved ones until 1 am. She pulled the slightly dense clear plastic cup towards her lips and took a light sip of the still water.
Which turned into a gulp.
Which turned into a couple
Which resulted in an empty clear container with tiny droplets of water still intacted.
"Oh my! I-is he okay? Is he injured! How bad was the crash?" Lacey raced through her questions in deaf panic.
"He's in hospital Lacey, what do you think?" Madeline said and walked back over to her previous seat, "they hit him pretty good. Something with the traffic lights, DUI I'm not sure he's just not okay" Madeline placed the cup on a seat next to her and slumped in her seat and wiped away her hair from her face.
"I'm on my way, where are you? Which hospital?" Madeline heard some fidgeting from her phone and had figured that Lacey was up on her feet by now. "Melpark Hospital," Madeline said taking a deep breath trying to calm her nerves.
"I'm leaving- Oh gosh- Mat-" and the line was cut, it went dead. It was confirmed to Madeline by the light beep of her phone.
When was he ever going away? She asked herself.
