Chapter 1

Laila Alam's past few weeks were not easy. Actually that would be an understatement. The past few weeks had been a waking nightmare, at the same time it felt like it was a blur.

After the news of her parents death, it felt like all she's done is arrange. Arrange for the funeral preparations, arrange for the technicalities, arrange for police station visits and arrange for her own feelings.

Since the day she got the worst news of her life, laila's been trying to make sense of everything in her life. Questioning everything. I mean, how is it possible that one minute she's blissfully sleeping in her bed, surrounded by the comfort of her house and next she's woken by the call telling her that her parents, her biggest support system, her everything, had been in serious car accident.

She never thought that her mother who's helped so many people by fighting for their cases in the court of law, and her father who must have saved countless lives working as a doctor would one day just disappear from her life like that.

Laila was still processing it.

Laila still felt numb.

Laila also felt empty.

The emptiness that surrounded the house and silence that followed her around was almost deafening to her. She felt empty and cold and unsure. Unsure how to go about her life from there on.

And it was after almost 3 weeks of this constant emptiness and this loud silence that laila decided that she can no longer live in this house anymore. She felt like the ghost of her parents linger around every corner and every niche of the house; in a form fond memories. It was hard for her but she knew she had to do it.

So from her parents savings and from hers, she decided to buy a flat in the city and get out of this white picket fence suburb. She couldn't find the will to sell the house still though.

And that's how Laila Alam found herself in present. Packing all of her stuff in the boxes. She didn't touch anything of her parents. It was foolish but she wanted to still hold on to the familiarity of it all for a bit longer.

It was hard work and she was about ready to sleep and never wake up. And she was almost asleep, when she heard the faint doorbell of her house ring. She was confused as to who would be here but thought it must be Mr. Lewis checking on her, again. Dont get her wrong she appreciated the care and the food, but she really was tired and really not in the mood for any pity. So Laila walked a little bit slower than she would to open a door. And finally she opened the door.

There was no Mrs. Lewis.

There was a blissfully sleeping baby in a basket though and she knew in that moment that her life really wouldn't be same ever.
