Every year for my birthday, I had blown out the flickering candles, and wished to be in a world of fantasy. To no avail, this wish never came true. This year I had officially decided this was the last year I would wish this, when I turned fifteen. Of course, every year I made this desision.

The decorations were all up, watching guests meander around the house, and me in a flowing silk green dress, with black hair cascading down my back like a sparkling waterfall. Mom was scampering around the kitchen like an angry bull, trying to organize every detail of everything, while Mandy ,my sister, and Dad were simply lounging on the sofa watching football. I stood alone in the hallway, seeing nothing but a life I abhored. This house was my penitentiary, not a sanctuary of good memories and laughter. Don't take me for churlish, I love my family. They've been the best they could be. But even the best could never diminish my longing for another world; another life, full of adventure and danger. Woe to me, the simple girl in Illinois, with her life laid out in front of her like a monotonous book.

"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Alyson! Happy birthday to you!!!!!!!!!!", my family sang as i mulled over how to say the wish this year. "Make a wish darling!" my mom urge. "I wish fantasy was my reality," I said dully in my mind.
