Joey was waiting for me on the porch when I cane around the house, after shimmying through the window.
His voice made me jump when it came out of the dark. "You're really going."
"I have to, it's my job." I said, giving him a glare as I tried to calm my heart rate.
"No, it's not. You just want to see someone fry." His tone was accusatory and almost hurt.
Guilt swelled up in me and I almost choked on the seed of truth in that statement. "That's not true. I'm the Mile's reporter and this is a big thing."
I couldn't quite make out his face in the dark, but his voice softened a little. "I hope you can handle this sister."
My voice was a whisper and only carried because the night was so still. "Me too."
Joey stepped a little more into the moonlight and held his arms out to me. I hesitantly stepped into him, hating how he towered over me. His was gentle against my ear "Be careful Argy."
"I will."
"Promise it."
"I promise I'll be careful."
He let go and went to sit on the steps. "I'll be here when you get back."
I opened my mouth to protest but he cut me off.
"Don't try and talk me out of it. If this is what it takes to make sure you're safe then this is where I stay."
I nodded, hoping he could see me. I made it to the fence before I stopped and started back a little. "I love you Joey."
"I love you too Argonne."
Then I ran. Letting the pounding of my feet fill the silence as I sprinted to the prison gates, knowing that I was about to see a man die.
Knowing I wouldn't be able to unsee it.
Sorry this is so short. I just knew that you guys had been waiting and I thought this was better than nothing. I was going to include it in the next chapter but decided just to split it. Love you guys!
