I jumped from roof to roof, glancing down into alleyways and streets for any survivors. I had already jumped 34 buildings when I heard the cries for help. I had to jump 3 more buildings to locate the cries. Glancing down, a woman was running into an alleyway, 3 zombies in tow. She reached the dead end. I had to help her. I jumped from the 2 story building, landing directly infront of her, my katana already infront of me.
A zombie came right for me and I sliced the the top of his head off. He fell to the floor. The other two were running side by side, and I decapetated them both in one shot. Their bodies fell and their heads rolled around. I took my knife, and stabbed them between the eyes. They stopped moving.
"Oh my god. Thank you so much!" She said. It sounded as if she was crying. I got up from the ground, wiping the blood of my katana with my shirt. I turned around to face her. She seemed surprised, maybe a little hurt.
"How.... How old are you?" She asked me.
"16." I said, sliding my katana back in it sheath. "Are you with anyone?"
"N-no," She stuttered. "I'm not."
"You can stay with me. I don't have a place to stay, but I've got food and water and I could keep you safe. But I travel a lot."
"You..protect me?"
"Don't underestimate me. I've survived 6 months all on my own. I could've left you to die, but I promised my mother I'd help those in need. If you choose to go your own way, I can give you 5, 1.13kg canned food and 5 waters. If you choose to stay with me, we will share all of the food and water, and I will supply more and more."
"Can I stay with you?"
"Yes. Do you know how to use a weapon?"
"I'm pretty good with a knife."
I held the blade of my knife and handed it to her. She gripped it tight.
"I should be the one protecting you." She said.
"No. My parents, my mom, made me promise to keep anyone I meet safe. I'm not allowed to be scared."
"You're only a kid."
"My childhood is over."
She looked hurt. Knowing now, I'll never have a childhood.
"C'mon. We have to get back onto the roof." I jump up, grabbing the sign to the store, and pull myself up. I reach my hand down and pull her up effortlessly. I use a window ledge and climb to the roof and grab my bags. I look back and she's struggling to get up. I walk back to her and pull her up as if she weighed nothing.
"You're strong for a kid."
"Dad was a soldier. I've been working out with him since I was 4."
"I thought you said you've been alone."
"I...am. But not in heart..." There was a little bit of awkward silence. I missed my parents everyday.
"Are you hungry?" I asked the stranger.
"I haven't eaten in days."
I took out 3 cans of food and an apple. My last apple.
"What do you want?"
She pointed at the can of ravioli.
"Good choice." I say to her. "You can have the apple too."
"I can't take that from you."
"Go ahead. I insist."
She takes the apple from my grasp.
"Would you like some water?"
"Yes please."
I take out an old can, and pour in the rain water from a bucket into it. I set some old papers I found in alleyways, and start a fire. I boil the water, not wanting to waste my bottled water.
