My prosthetic locked and that's not in anyway good unless I want to cut my leg in a horrible matter. If I land on my leg, the metal from my prosthetic will cut deeply into my leg. I can hear Hayley screaming at me, but I'm almost at the other roof, I have little time. I put all my weight into the front of my body, tilting forward, I stick out my arms, hopping to soften the landing. And the first thing I hear is a loud snap and I feel the pain rush from my arms to my chest. I curl up into a ball, screaming in pain. Tears rush down my cheeks, and I can hear Hayley. She perfects her jump and runs towards me. Her hands hover over me.
"W-what do I do?" She asks, panicking.
"Unlock my prosthetic. Please!! There's a knob, twist it to the right and unhook everything, get it off me!"
She does as I tell her and my prosthetic slips off with ease. My leg is red from how tightly it locked. I lay there is pain in my left arm, and its swelling.
"I need a stick and some cloth!"
She nods and jumps into the ally way, her knife in hand. She returns in 5 minutes with 3 sticks and a button down shirt. I take the longest stick, placing it under my left arm. I ask her to tie the shirt around me in a sling fashion.
"We have to get to a hospital."
"There's no one there that can help you there!"
"Yes there is."
"Who?!"
"A hospital three blocks down, an old friend cares for the injured there. There's army guards to keep the dead out. Take me there."
"I-I can't.."
"Yes you can! Hook my prosthetics on. Carry me in a piggy pack position. I'll still protect us." I say, pulling my katana from its sheath that is on my back.
"I..I.."
"I'm not heavy. You have to do this. Please."
She hesitates, but nods. She hooks on my prosthetic not too tight, and turns around, beckoning me. I slowly stand in pain, and climb on her back. I hold around her chest with one arm, my other holding the katana at a safe distance. She slowly climbs down the building, carefully judging her foot placements.
We make it safely to the bottom, no walkers near. She breaks into a jog, my 3ft katana trailing behind us. I kill a lone walker every now and then. We get to the hospital in less than 5 minutes, and the guards already have their snipers aiming at us. Hayley gently puts me down, and I balance on my prosthetic. A guard takes out a walkie talkie.
"Two females at the entrance, one fits your description doctor."
The annoying buzz seems like a year long wait.
"Ask her for her name."
The guard looks at me, and I don't speak. Instead, I motion for the walkie. He gives it to me with no hesitation.
"Hey Finn, it's Dani.."
I can hear him sigh, and I can imagine the smile on his face. I can hear footsteps coming from the other side of the door. I hand the guard the walkie when the doors swing open. My katana drops from my grasp, and I automatically break into a skip, jumping into his arms, holding him tight.
"I..I thought you were dead.." He said, his head resting in the crook of my neck.
"Still breathing.. Just a broken arm." I respond as he gently put me down.
I take a good look at him, and he's still as handsome as the last time I saw him, just a little tired looking.
"Finn," I say, turning to my friend. "This is Hayley."
She steps closer as Finn puts his hand out. Their hands meet.
"A pleasure to meet you." She says.
"It's all mine."
Their hands return to their side and Finn instructs me to get onto his back. I climb on with no hesitation and I relax on him.
Finn is, and forever will be the love of my life. Corny, I know. But we've known each other since we were kids. Our parents were good friends, and always tried to set us up. He was 3 years older than me, but my parents agreed they never had a problem with him, so his age didn't matter. One day, after our families decided we should all have an outing together, we basically got put on a date. Our parents both dropped us off, telling us to get everything out of the cars, and to find a good spot. After getting everything out, they told us they were gonna find parking spots, and right before our eyes, both cars sped out of that parking lot faster than Sonic. Since than, we've been together, and that was three years ago. Now, after the apocalypse happened he was called into work, since he was the youngest, most skilled doctor in the area. He never got out of there, and I never saw him again. Until today.
"I have a surprise for you." He told me, glancing back at me as I rested my chin on his shoulder.
"Can it wait? My arm hurts so bad."
"I don't think so. You'll really wanna see it."
I turn my head so I can see him. "You're still so stubborn." I say softly.
"And you're still so beautiful."
I smile at him. All my life, I've been a tough, quiet girl you didn't wanna mess with, but since he entered my life, he made me feel loved. He gave me a friend.
Hayley trailed behind us, my katana trailing behind her. She stood awkwardly behind us.
"Hayley brought me here ya know." I told Finn, trying to bring her into our conversation as Finn led us through the halls. She caught up to us and Finn smiled. "Thank you."
She smiled and shook her head. "She saved my life, it's the least I could do."
"She's always doing stuff like that."
She chuckled. "Well I'm glad she could help me. I'm glad I met her too."
I smiled at her, and she smiled back. It was peaceful silence until Finn spoke.
"We're here." I gently slid down his back, catching my balance easily. A woman stood with her back turned to us, and she had a prosthetic hand.
"What is thi-" I got cut off, the woman turned to face me.
"Dani.."
"M-mom?"
