I sat there silently, rubbing my leg. She asked me what happened to my leg. I take a deep breath, and I re-hook the prosthetic on.
"When I was 12, I was coming home from school.. And I was waiting for the bus and I saw this little girl run into the street. She was so young, she didn't know what she was doing. I ran into the road after her, before the truck could hit her... I took the hit for her. The tires.... Crushed my leg. Shattered it... They had to amputate it, and I didn't get the prosthetic till last year. So, yeah.. I may not be much, but I'm enough."
She looked at me with sad eyes, and I could tell she was forcing a smile. I stood up, fixing the kinks and I did my work out. She watched me at first, not saying anything, but when I started jumping jacks, she joined in. I smiled and I started my jumps from roof to roof. She stared at me and I jumped back to her.
"You're gonna need to learn how to do that ya know." I tell her.
She looks at me confused.
"I'll show you. All you gotta do is run. If you miss, try and grab something."
She chuckles. "Thanks for the encouragement."
"No problem. Now jump!"
She nods, still looking worried. She takes a few steps back, skips, run and jumps. She almost misses, falling on her face instead of landing. I shake my head, smiling. I jump after her, perfecting my landing. My prosthetic clicking.
"You okay?" I ask her, as she lays on the floor in defeat.
"Yeah." She says not looking up.
"I'll show you how to jump so you land on your feet."
She rolls onto her back, looking up at me. "That'd be nice."
I laugh, and help her up.
"Now watch and listen. You gotta already be running. Like this." I start to run, and I skid to a stop at the edge. I turn to look at her and she nods. "When you jump, you wanna push off the ledge with one leg and your other in front. When you go to land, put your feet together and get ready to bend your knees so you don't break your legs."
I walk back to her, and then break into a run. I push off the ledge and get ready to land, but something bad happened. I heard a clicking noise and my prosthetic locked.
