Before HTTYD 1...

Toothless was a Night Fury living under the command of the Queen Firestorm, the Red Death. He had been taken in by a family of Monstrous Nightmares, who called him Toothless because when they first saw him, he appeared to have no teeth.

The Nightmare family had a single mother (the father had been killed by dragon hunters), and she had a son named Hookfang, who was a few years older than Toothless.

Hookfang was jealous of Toothless because the Night Fury was second-in-command of the "Hive", called "General Toothless". Hookfang was always grumpy and insisted that once Queen Firestorm took her eyes off of his precious Night Fury, she would realize how much potential he had, and appoint him to general.

Toothless was watching the sun set when he heard Firestorm's voice in his head. "General Toothless, it is time for the next raid. Gather the dragons in the east section of the Hive and take them to Berk."

Toothless obeyed her order without hesitation. He shouted for Hookfang and the rest of his friends, Stormfly, Meatlug, Barf and Belch, and Sharpshot. Stormfly was a Deadly Nadder and his best friend. She was brave, fierce, and loyal. Meatlug was a Gronckle who was calm and quiet, and Toothless suspected that she honestly really would like to skip raiding. Barf and Belch were Zipplebacks – well, just one Zippleback. They were mischievous and always getting into trouble. And Sharpshot was a Terrible Terror who was just really funny.

Several other dragons gathered. Toothless knew some of the other dragons, such as Thornado and Kingstail. Thornado was a Thunderdrum who was proud, brave, and sometimes a little foolish. Kingstail was a Deadly Nadder with the same personality of Thornado.

More and more dragons were gathering. Is it enough? He wondered, sending his thoughts to the Queen. "Yes" Firestorm told him. "Start the raid, General"

Toothless roared, gathering the chatting dragons to his attention. "It's time for the raid!" he roared. He lifted off into the air. The dragons followed him, all heading for Berk.

Toothless fired the first shot, hitting someone's house. He soared down, diving through the flames, feeling his scales heat up, hearing the screams of the people around him. He heard the shots of the other dragons as he flew out and back up.

He didn't take animals, like the others did. As a Night Fury, his job was to make the Berkians afraid. He couldn't risk being shot. He saw Kingstail get caught in a net, and he blasted the Vikings who had caught the Nadder, and they let go of the net.

Kingstail took off into the air, taking a sheep with him and grinning broadly as he laughed at the humans below him.

Once Toothless saw that most of the dragons were in the air, he called for the rest of them to fly back. Queen Firestorm, he thought. I believe we have enough food now. Most of the dragons have at least one large animal. Permission to return to the Hive? He heard Firestorm's voice in his mind again. "Permission granted. Fly back fast. I'm famished." "We have enough food!" Toothless roared. "Let's head back to the Hive!"

They all flew back, clutching sheep or yaks in their talons. The mob of dragons flew through the tunnels until they reached the huge pit of lava in the center of the volcano. Queen Firestorm raised her head above the lava.

Dragons dropped the food into her open mouth, which she swallowed immediately. Other dragons were coming back from different islands, and they dropped even more food into the Queen's mouth.

Finally she closed it and sent a message through the brain of every dragon. "I'm full now. You may go."
