Riverside Rogues

Chapter 2

Five years later ....

This was exactly what I expected would happen, an argument over power.

Sighing once more, I watched as about fifty different rogues squabbled over the decision, almost jumping to violence. Getting tired, and knowing that I could still intimidate any wolf here, I stood up and growled. Silence beckoned me forwards into a gap in the arguments.

" No-one is in charge of anything ! You understand ! We're our own people, no-body runs our group, we travel together, and you can come and go whenever. But no one is in charge of anyone, now shut up ! We're supposed to be careful around here ! There are two packs about this zone. So we have to be careful, you know how they get. Remember, we're going to just, settle down . . . " I paused, feeling a blush appear on my face at the amount of focus everyone had on me. " We should just go .... "

Walking back to the outside of the circle, I sat down and released  the tight breath I had been holding and the tension on my chest slowly loosened. A sudden freaky nausea waved over me, when did I get so. . . Angry ? A snapping pair of feet walked over and crouched beside me, Maluke looked at me, a silver glint still present.

" You okay ? "

" No, I don't like this anymore. I knew it would happen before it happened. "

" Well, it's not your fault, every time we picked up anyone, we stated how it was, it was the past few groups who stirred things up with this idea anyway. If anything this discussion should be about asking them to leave and go back to whatever they were doing. Winter is coming closer and they're telling us to go north. Who does that? " He scoffed and looked back over at the group who were now more quietly still suggesting that someone should be in charge while others were reminding them of what they signed up for, more argued that it isn't colder up north in the winter and voices were raising once more.

I looked up, my eyes burning with the attempt of condensing my tears to nothing. Thankfully what he said was true, I guess.

This started the winter we first met Oscar, Ash, and Misty, the time when we were looking for a new spot to rest during the cold months. We managed to catch the attention of ten rogues, who were doing what I'd always wanted to. Creating a safe group, to travel and search more ground. Well, the three we were travelling with wanted to go along.

" I wish we'd never even agreed that this was a good idea, now we are the size of a pack and now we do need the authority of an alpha. I guess I just thought it would be easier than this. "

" Well after your bossy display, people have started considering you as alpha. " I snarled at him sideways, like I care what a bunch of idiots who think the north is warmer in winter think " The elder wolves suggested it. They're not insensible Ava."

Looking down at the floor, I tucked my knees up to my chest and closed myself up. That isn't good, I don't want that, that's a difficult job, and a huge responsibility. The sensible ones will probably end up in charge in the end, more or less. So I shouldn't worry.

The group started moving ahead, so I was guessing that we were moving on, this was usually more exciting, but no, I wanted to walk in the other direction. I could. Maluke was already with the crowd, probably knowing it's the only way I would follow and never would I leave my brothers side. That side, I was soon walking next to.
