"Look! Doesn't the sky look so pretty?"

Soft hands took my own and held them in a gentle touch.

"Hehe, almost makes you wanna forget about everything..."

I sat next to my friend as we stared at the battered land before us. Soft....she was so soft and lovely. A ray of sunshine in the hell soaked atmosphere. So unlike the rough and calloused me. Her braided hair whipped backwards in the muggy wind as she embraced me in a tight hug. I could remember her smell. A sweet yet bitter scent of rosemary and sweat picked up from our humid surroundings. I pulled a piece of hair from behind her neck and lifted it in my hand to place a gentle kiss upon it. Slight auburn gold that at times was blonde and at other times a burning brown. My resolute eyes looked at her, observing the sweet girl I had come to know for the past three months and I couldn't help but feel my heart skip a beat.

"Elisa I lo-"

She stopped me before I could say anything, two quiet tears cascading down her face in an anguished yet constricted sob. When those red eyes looked back at me and those sharp teeth lay ready in her mouth; I knew what she would say next.

"(Name)....I want you to kill me."

It was a hot summers day at the pier of burgundy swamp. Frogs croaked out, Birds sang, bugs buzzed, and humans lay rotting under the waters. Three months and five days, that's how long I had been here. Waiting....watching.....trying my best to survive.  The nights had all but blended together for me as if whisked away by the tides of an everlasting sea. Time was what I needed. On some days I had too much of it. On others, too little. However, the days I remembered seemed to be the worst. I saw her. A figure who came and kissed me lightly on the cheek, comforting me when I was alone only to dig into me with her sharp talons later on. I played with a hunter's knife in my hand as I rested my legs over the docks. It's hilt was comfortable in my palm, a weight that reminded me I was there, anchored to the soft marsh grasses. It's hilt had been made black with hardened plastic, a carving of a flower pressed into it. The blade was simple, efficient enough for what I'd needed to do with its silver blade and ridged edges. I dragged my index over it, testing it calmly. It was becoming dull at this point, I would need to sharpen it. Bringing my eyes to the water ahead I saw her.

A lovely egret, dunking her head in and out looking for fish of any kind. Her wings were a pure white as if the angels themselves had crafted her feathers. Yellow bill and legs stood out against the mucky backdrop of filthy water like gold in a pile of coal. Her brown eyes, so warm and burning were off me. I put a hand on my stomach as it growled out in protest. It didn't have much meat, but I was desperate; starvingly desperate. The cabin I had been keeping shelter at was just a walk away, it was like a free meal staring me in the face. I stood, making sure that the graceful animal didn't see me. Water sloshed slowly around my knees making the humidity in the air even more prominent. Somehow the poor thing still didn't see me, surprising since I was not the most graceful thing in the water. I was almost behind it....so close to the bird that I could smell the musk that came off of it, however, it seemed to notice my futile efforts.

"Fuck!" I yelled out as the startled bird bolted in front of my face.

I raised my hands in defense to the situation only to topple on my side instead. The murky water came warm and quick surrounding my body an upraising the grip on my hilt. The blade, to which I had thought was dull, cut through my hand which dyed the water a crimson red. The pain was unbearable. Tears clouded my vision as I groaned in agony. I had been too stupid, too eager to fill my stomach with something that didn't taste like the dirt and rocks that made up this accursed place. I dragged my drenched body through the mud and vegetation as I made it back to the pier with as much speed as I could muster up.  Damn, if I didn't make it back to the cabin....
