Those last few words from his fiance replayed in Eekainine's mind over and over as he wandered the streets of New Orleans. Since it was late at night on October 30th, humans celebrated the upcoming holiday with numerous parties and festivities. They littered the streets in masses, not a care in the world about the supernatural threats that were creeping into their reality. And if it were up to the hybrid that walked among them, those threats would simply remain as just a threat.
Since Eekainine was able to blend in with the crowd due to what night it was, he effectively wandered the streets without being questioned about his choice of outfit and general demeanor. The Elder always chose to wear elaborate and decorative blue and white robes since they were the traditional choice of clothing within angel society. When paired with the obnoxious amount of jewelry favored on a daily basis, the mere aesthetic he was able to pull off gave him that holy sort of vibe that humans tended to question. It did help, when around them on a normal day, however, that he didn't have a set of typical angel wings. His family line simply did not have the genes to support an active set of wings, and that made it significantly easier to fit in among the humans.
Of course, fitting in on Earth for any being was the easiest accomplishment on the night before Halloween. People of all ages ran around dressed up as monsters and characters of evil, some so convincing that Eekainine had to stop for a moment and actually wonder if they were a potential threat on that night. Those minor stops, however, were quickly disregarded as those words from his fiance repeated themselves again, and his mission was back on track once again.
'Make it back into Heaven by midnight.'
The simple request was proving more impossible as each second passed by without any signs of tracking down the demon, M'koyna. Choosing such a busy nightlife scene like there was in New Orleans for a demon was actually a smarter decision on their end. The more populated an area was, the easier it was to hide among the humans and wait until the time was right to do their evil. And after taking a couple of hours to search the city, he and his team had decided the sighting was either false or no longer a threat.
The team of angels Eekainine had met up with once he had finally made it down to Earth had already been through the city multiple times before the Elder had joined them. They were a skilled team of warriors that were trained specifically in how to track down a demon and send it back to Hell with minimal disruption to Earth. Since New Orleans was a well known spawning point for demons, many warriors of Heaven chose to explore the large city, as well as others around the world, to be able to know the streets and effectively do their duties with ease. Although, since they had already spent hours on that particular mission, and each of them carried the fear of not making it home before midnight would strike for Halloween, Eekainine was left to finish what he believed was left of the mission. If it were any other demon that had been the center of the threat, the hybrid would have been right behind the rest of the team in leaving. But dealing with M'koyna was an entirely different matter.
Even Eekainine hit a point, however, where it was obvious the sighting was simply a hoax. Or, perhaps, M'koyna wasn't actually planning anything major that year for Halloween and was no longer around on Earth. Whatever the possibility was, the hybrid decided at 10pm that the search was no longer worth pursuing with just how close to midnight he found the time to be. His feet and legs ached from wandering the city for hours, eyes strained as any sign of a demon captured his attention, and the general feeling of Halloween growing near turned a knot in his stomach that both disgusted and intrigued him at the same time. With his hands resting on his hips, Eekainine stopped in the middle of the street abruptly as the feeling of defeat loomed overhead. Ignoring the curses and shouts from those around him for stopping so suddenly on the busy street, the hybrid gazed up towards the cloudy night sky and let out a defeated sigh. Not knowing if M'koyna was truly still wandering the streets would undoubtedly plague his mind until November 1st when the aftermath of Halloween would be able to be seen.
