Today is one of those days where I visit Miller, but instead of going after school like I normally do i'm going before. I have to go before because after I’m taking my mom to her doctor’s appointment. When I arrive in front of Millers door I knock and Miller appears with the biggest smile across his face.
"April, what are you doing here? You shouldn’t be here until after school." he pulls me into a hug.
"After school I have to take mom to her doctor’s appointment, so I thought I would come before. Is that okay?"
"Of course it is, come in already. I had the nurse Lilly make us brownies last night." he passes me a tray of brownies with white powdered sugar sprinkled over them. We both tried one of them and trust me they were amazing. For a moment we just sit there in silence, and then he starts looking at me weirdly.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Nothing, its just you never talk about anything with me. It’s always the same thing."
"Well what do you want to talk about then?" he paused a moment before he answered.
"How’s the world treating my little sister? What’s public school is it the same, oh and do you have any friends. I bet you have a lot of them. And you probably have a boyfriend too." all of it spilled out question after question. I can tell he misses going to regular school. I remember him telling me that school here at the hospital makes him feel like he's actually crazy, but he knows he's not.
“I have tons of friends Mill, and I have lots of things to do all the time, but I’d rather spend all my free time with my brother."
"You are so full of shit. I mean come on, spend time with your brother."
"Mill its true!" okay. I might be telling a little bit of a story but miller does not need to know all the details.
"Yeah okay. April I think your crazy and this is coming from the crazy one here."
"Miller you’re not crazy."
"No April what you need to do is get out and live your life while your young. I mean you actually can the only thing I can see other than this room is the court yard, it’s not that exciting."
"Why would I want to do anything if you can’t do it with me mill? You’re my brother and i’m not going to enjoy anything unless you’re enjoying it with me." I smile at him and he smiles right back while pulling me into another hug.
"You’re the best April. Now get out of here and go to school." I smiled at him and waved goodbye.
When I get down to the parking lot I get into my car. A blue jeep from my Aunt Linda right before she died on my 16th birthday. I guess she pre ordered it or something because she died a year before my 16th birthday, but I love her even more for that. It took me about 35 minutes to get to school. I get out of my car to see the same thing I see everyday. A packed parking lot with some loud ass teenagers who still have a lot of growing up to do before the end of this senior year. I do what I normally do and go straight to class. By the time I reach lunch i’m completely worn out, and ready to g home. I grab my lunch tray and start walking over to my regular lunch table in the back of the room, where I do indeed sit alone. I’m almost there when someone bumps into me hard, causing all of my food to fall all over me. Now I’m on the floor with a strange man on top of me.
"Shit i’m so sorry, I wasn’t watching where I was going." I look up to see two big beautiful brown eyes and a smile a mile long. He stands to his feet and offers me a hand, and I take it.
