Wandering through the graveyard it felt like someone was watching me. I paused and turned in a full circle, scanning the area around me. The gravestones stood silently, row upon row like soldiers long forgotten. I stood a moment longer, only just starting to move again when a shrill scream pierced the silence. I stood still once more, lending my ear to the now eerie silence. Nothing. I took another step and the scream came again.
The race had begun.
I ran. With every step came another scream, but I couldn’t stop. Not now. Not when I was so close. Not when I could see my goal right in front of me. Not when could just reach out and touch it. I wouldn’t stop if I had a choice. But I didn’t. I tripped and hit the ground hard. My hair stood on end as I turned around, a shiver raced down my spine, and a lump came to my throat. It was him. He opened his mouth and let out a chilling rattle. His was not a language you could learn but was one you simple understood when the time came. My time had come. He had won.
