Chapter 6: Happy Birthday

May had rolled around again and my classes were coming to an end. I had decided during the winter break that I was changing my major. I realized I missed helping Alex teach and at my age it would be almost impossible to break into the music industry, even as a composer. I changed some of my classes around and If I played my cards right I would be done with my classes

come winter. My birthday was coming in a week and it made me a little sad. I will be turning twenty nine and it saddened me that I was entering my last year of my twenties. I guess I was freaking out because I was closer to being my mom's age when she lost my dad. I shook my head to clear my thoughts and went back to working on my thesis for my English Lit. class. I sighed as my phone began to ring. I got up at dug it out of my purse. I looked at the number and smiled.

“Hey Luke, is his flight delayed?”

“It would seem. He just wanted me to tell you not to wait up for him.”

“When you finally see him tell him I will be waiting anyway. He should know that by now.” I heard Luke let out a soft chuckle and then a sigh.

“I'll text you when I have your man in tow.”

“Thanks Luke.” He said his goodbyes and hung up. I looked back at my desk and made a face. My lovely cat was laying on my paper looking at me all cute. “Tally, really? Come on puff ball I need to get this done so mommy can get her degree.” I lifted him off my work and cradled him in my arms. “If mommy gets her degree then she can start working and feel like she is contributing. Your poor daddy has to pay for everything right now since I am a unemployed bum.” It was then I realized I was talking to my cat like he was a person and I began to laugh a little. “Oh Tally I really need a vacation or a shrink.” I placed him down on the floor and he curled up on his cat tree in our office. I went back to work for a few more hours until I heard the front door open. Slamming my book shut, I stretched and headed down the stairs. I rounded the corner into the living room and found Tom standing there with a relived look on his face. I smiled as he dropped his bags and sighed. “Welcome home!” He turned around and gave me a amused look.

“I told Luke to tell you not to wait up. Darling it is almost three in the morning.” I looked at the clock on our mantle and began to shake my head.

“I had not idea it was that late. I've been working on my thesis for my Lit class. I must have lost track of time.” He just rolled his eyes playfully and wrapped me up in his arms. “I'm glad tomorrow is Saturday or I would be a mess for school tomorrow. How did the tour go?”

“Good, tiring, but good. I missed you.”

“I miss you too, but I am glad you had a good trip. Are you hungry?”

“No love, just tired. I want to shower then crawl into our bed.” Tally had come down from the office and was rubbing himself against Tom's legs. “I take it he missed me too.” I scooped the fur ball up and handed him over to Tom. “Have you been keeping your mum company while I'm gone?”

“He has, but he also has been hindering me in doing my report.”

“What is it about?”

“I get to compare a British author to Shakespeare. Down side is I did not get to pick which author.”

“Who did you get?”

“Tolkien.”

“How is it going?”

“I'm almost done just want to proofread it and add a few points, but that my dear can wait til later today.”

“I wholeheartedly agree. Go get changed for bed. I'll jump in the shower and join you soon.” I kissed his cheek and led him up the stairs. The bags from his trip could wait til morning. It wasn't long til we were both laying in bed curled up together.
