◈A D R I A N◈
My heart was beating wildly after my confession. I hung my head down with shame since I couldn't bear to look at the disappointment, or worse, disgust in his eyes.
I told him everything. From the burger Damon gave me to my scarred back, I did not missed anything out.
Logan was silent during the entire confession of mine, occasionally clenching his fists when my story peaked to a height like a roller coaster ride.
"The end," I declared softly while giving a slight laugh to mask my embarrassment.
"There's nothing funny in this," Logan growled. The chair scraped against the floor as he got up suddenly and ran his hands through his hair in an exasperated manner.
The atmosphere was dense with tension and I found myself hoping for the friendly nurse to pop in with her positive vibes. Sadly, the door remained shut within its frame.
Logan started pacing the room like an agitated tiger in an enclosure. I, on the other hand, was waiting nervously for my judgement day. He came to a stop in front of me and sighed.
"What am I going to do with you? You're in deeper shit than I'd thought," he grumbled in defeat. He slumped on the foot of the bed as if my sins had burdened him heavily.
My throat was tight with guilt and I wished I was a better liar than spilling my guts like the fool I was.
Logan rubbed his face and continued, "Robbery was bad as it is but now you've got a dead man involved? How on earth did you managed to fuck up so bad, kid?"
I asked myself the very same question every minute since then, I mused wryly.
"You can hand me to the police if you want. At least I'll be safe there," I suggested in a voice so soft I was positive he wouldn't be able to hear it but he did. He shot up like an arrow and looked at me with wide, disbelieving eyes.
"You wouldn't be here in the first place if you did that two years ago! Little lamb like you wouldn't last a minute in a correctional unit!" Logan spat.
The truth he spoke had me bitch-slapped hard and to cover up my shame, I retaliated just as hard.
"What am I supposed to do then?! Damon will shred me to slivers the minute I step out of this building!" I yelled at him, my breath coming out in pants from trepidation and frustration.
Logan went red and yelled back, "And you think those juveniles won't do the same?! You take a step in there and don't even dream about coming out from that hell!"
We glared at each other, neither wished to back down as anger had us wrapped around its pinky.
I was trapped in a labyrinth, except there were only dead ends in the maze. I could only choose the better worse.
"You don't know Damon. At least I'll stand a chance in there," I whispered in resignation.
Maybe those deadly eyes would stop haunting my dreams then.
Logan wanted to say something but was interrupted by a knock on the door. The door opened and the elderly nurse entered the room with a bowl of steamy porridge on a tray.
She settled the tray on the table and turned to look at us. I guessed she must have heard our argument and decided to step in to diffuse the dispute.
Putting on a bright smile, she walked over to me with that bowl and said, "You must be starving now. I brought you some porridge as promised."
"I'm not hungry," I protested.
"Nonsense! You need as much energy as you can get now that you're recuperating," she chastised and blew at a spoonful of white mush before placing it before my lips.
I blushed at her pampering and stammered, "I⎯I can eat it on my own, ma'am"
"Oh, call me Helga, sweet boy," she laughed at my discomfort and placed the bowl back on table before wheeling it within my grasp since I couldn't hold the bowl and feed myself with a broken wrist.
I swirled the bland porridge with the metal spoon in disinterest and reluctantly gulping down a spoonful under her watchful stare.
Logan was standing quietly in a corner and this couldn't get any more awkward with me slurping up the porridge obediently under Helga's supervision and Logan's disgruntled stare.
"Your mother's on her way to the hospital now," Helga said out of the blue. I dropped the spoon with a loud clang when I heard that news. That that woman was on her way to wring my head off from my neck if she finds out the truth.
I was so wrapped up in my own shit that I forgot about the bigger issue here.
Helga continued without noticing my expression, "She must be worried sick by now⎯"
Her words fell on deaf ears as the gears in my head started cranking to think of a way to diffuse the atomic bomb. All I cared was to get Logan out of here before the woman sees him.
"You need to leave," my voice came out bitter.
"What?" Helga and Logan asked simultaneously.
Gritting my teeth, I looked at Logan and repeated my words, "You need to leave now."
Logan was about to retort but I cut him off.
"Please," I pleaded.
He clenched his jaw and turned to leave, leaving me feeling lower than an earthworm after all he had done for me.
Minutes after he left, the sound of angry heels clacking against the hard floor had me groaning.
The door slammed open to reveal a very angry woman. Her red coat fluttered like the cape of a vampire complimented her flushed cheeks from the haste and cold weather.
Helga recovered from the tense situation and stepped forward to greet her, "You must be Mrs. Davies. Adrian is doing well now so don't worry too much."
The woman gave a tight smile and replied, "That's great. Now if you'll excuse us, I have much to say to my dear son."
