"Adaline," My Grandmother said, "wake up." she grabbed my shoulder and shook me lightly.
"Mmmh," I said inaudibly. I up and rubbed my eyes. Saturday, the day after yesterday, yesterday's tomorrow. "No, I don't wanna go!" I laid back down and put my pillow over my head.
"Adaline," she sat on my bed and took the pillow from me. "Now."
"FINNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!" I said, clearly annoyed.
I got dressed and put my brown hair in a messy bun, put on a yellow crop top with some jeans. Then I put my magenta scrunchie on my wrist and put my glasses on.
"Ready," I said.
***Time Passing***
We knocked on Josh's door, it took a couple of times before we heard him marching towards the door. The whole time the dog was barking.
"What do you want?" Josh said bags under his eyes.
"We came to talk to you, well Adaline wants to apologize."
"Well damn right!" He stood there hands on his hips, "Well?"
He eventually invited us inside and we sat down in his living room. Grandma's home-made cookies between us. His house lingered with the smell of cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol.
"Mr......" I began.
"Mr. Bryan." He said
"Mr. Bryan," I copied. "I just want to know why you are...beating that poor dog and if there's no reason, why you still have it." I sat patiently.
He grabbed a cookie and nibbled on it. "Well," he said when he was finished, he laced his hands on his lap. "I had a daughter, Lillie, she well, she got that dog, about, five years ago. Two years before that she was diagnosed with cancer at the age of seven." he rubbed between his eyebrows, "she died before you guys moved here, so one year ago. I'm just so mad at that dog, and when she got that dog I surprised her with it, and my wife didn't care to tell me that she was allergic to dogs and she left. So I lived with Lillie, without her mother, fighting ." tears ran down his cheeks as he shared with us his scrambled story.
I sat there in shock, "What? No, that's not true! It can't be!" my Grandma put a hand on my shoulder. That poor dog! He must miss her so much!
"I never gave up that dog because it was the only thing that I could remember her. I know it's wrong to hurt him and rename him but I can't help hurting him."
"Wait, you renamed him?" I said.
"Yes, Lillie named him Baby, but I thought that was a girly name for a boy so I named him Fang." He said embarrassed.
"Sooooo, will you ever give him away?" I said biting my lower lip.
"No." He said without hesitation.
"What why?" I asked incredulously, "you said yourself you can't help hurting him!"
"But I also said that I will never give up that dog because it's the only thing left of Lillie." His voice raised until he was shouting.
"I know but I don't want you hurt him any more than you already have," I said quietly, very intimidated by how fast Josh was getting angry.
He shot out of his chair and pointed to the door. "GET OUT!!! GET OUT RIGHT NOW, YOU HEARD ME I AM NOT GIVING UP THAT DOG!!!!! GET OUT YOU OLD LADY AND YOU STUPID LITTLE GIRL!"
The back of my eyes stung with fear, now I knew how "Fang" felt every time Josh yelled at him. I stood up. Josh was tall for a grown man, I was small for a teen so he easily he towered over me. "Fine, but karma is gonna bite you in the butt someday." Only I didn't say butt, I said something more unpleasant to my sweet grandmother's ears. Then we walked out of his house.
The next day I wake up in my bed, sun shining from the slits in my curtains. I look down to see I fell asleep in my clothes from yesterday. After we talked to Josh, my grandmother and grandfather, and I went to go visit Elijah and his family, we all went to the beach. It was fun Elijah took his Border collie, Sammy, she pulled me down and dragged me through the sand. It was super fun! I saw my friend Taylor and Amanda while Elijah and I went to go eat ice cream. They, of course, made fun of us holding hands.
But now the fun was over. It was Sunday, tomorrow we had school. I got out of bed and went downstairs. No one was home. I saw a small note on the fridge I snatched it. Adaline, your grandpa and I have gone to church I didn't think you'd want to come today so I let sleep you in, Grandma.
Oh ok, they didn't usually let me stay home from church. I didn't really know what to do now that I was home alone, then I looked outside my sliding glass door and saw the dog laying down. Josh's car wasn't out front, actually, it was nowhere to be seen!
I opened the door and the dog stood up and started barking. I shushed him but he wouldn't stop. "Baby," I said softly "I won't hurt you!! I like you, I want you to be mine! And I know you want to be with me." When I was about three feet away from him he was pulling on his chain with all his might. I crouched down and slowly approached him. I put my hand out to him when I was close enough. His mouth was foaming and he was pulling on the chain so much but he stopped to sniff me. When he seemed to okay me I started going closer he looked me in the eye and bit my hand! "AH!" I said startled I jumped up and ran back home.
