So in this story Lance is a mermaid. Keith is the son of a pirate, who doesn't exactly give him much freedom. We'll see where this goes. Also they're both roughly 12 at the beginning of this story.
Keith was awoken by the ship shaking. He was used to this. "New stop." He grumbled as he rolled out of bed. He got dressed and went outside.
The sun shone in his eyes as he stepped out. His father's yell could be heard from anywhere on the ship. "Keith! Get up here!"
Keith rolled his eyes and went to his father's normal spot. "Yes father?" He felt a slap on his back. "I've come to say you're old enough to start being in charge. Your mother and I, along with the crew are going to roam this island. You stay here with Cosmo. We will be back shortly after sunset. The ship is in your hands. And if anything is to happen to the ship, you will be punished."
Keith's heart lit up. He nodded and watched the crew leave. "I get the ship to myself." He said. He smiled brightly at no one.
Keith looked around the ship. He saw a small rowboat. "I'm sure father wouldn't mind me exploring the waters a bit. Besides, I'll be back by sundown." The dog whined at his legs.
Keith pet the dog. "Come in boy. Let's go explore!" He said happily. Keith packed some food in the boat, not knowing how long he would be out. He got the boat lowered into the water and got him and the dog in. He pushed off of the ship and into the open waters.
He rowed around for a while, still staying where he could see the boat. The dog knew how to swim, but he didn't. The dog could get them both back if something were to happen.
He closed his eyes for a moment, enjoying his new found freedom. He was startled by the movement of the boat. It wasn't the waves. Something hit it. He looked around. The ship was still quite a bit away.
Keith looked into the water. The water came up and splashed him. He jumped backwards sputtering. Before he knew it, he was in the water. He scrambled around. Something, or rather someone, grabbed him. He was thrown onto the boat. He coughed for a while. The dog put its paws on his chest to help.
Water came out of his mouth. He wiped his mouth and looked around. He was met by another face in the water. He gasped as the person rose. "Are you okay? I didn't mean to try and drown you." The person said.
Keith saw a tail. Well that can't be right. "I must be hallucinating." He mumbled. "No no. I'm real. If I wasn't, you would have died." A merman?
Keith's eyes went wide. He smiled. "Are... are you a merman?" The half fish nodded. "The name's Lance." He held out a wet hand. Keith shook it. "Keith."
Lance smiled. "There's a rock on the shore. I can take you there." He suggested. Keith nodded. Lance went underwater and started swimming. Keith rowed after him.
The three were soon at a flat rock. Keith got the boat onto the sand. Him and Cosmo stepped onto the rock and sat down.
"My father told me that merpeople were just folklore. That they didn't exist. Am I dreaming? My dad tells me I'm in charge then I meet a merman. What are the odds? Pinch me." He rambled and held out his arm.
Lance pinched his arm. Keith yanked his arm back. "Ouch. So I'm not dreaming."
Lance giggled. "Nope. Not a dream." His tail splashed in the water around them.
Keith marveled at this half man creature. He had never seen such a thing. Granted, he doesn't see much more than what they catch.
Lance noticed his amazement. "For a sailor, you don't swim too well." Lance said.
Keith shook his head. "I was never allowed off th0e ship, so I never learned."
Lance held out a hand. "Come swim with me. I'll hold you above the water. I wont let you drown." The merman smiled.
Keith cautiously took his hand and lowered himself into the water. Lance did as promised and held him up.
Keith moved his legs. He wasn't drowning. He smiled and giggled.
Lance smiled at him. "See? Not so bad."
Keith looked at the water. "Wow. This is amazing."
Lance nodded. "Fun right?"
The two stayed there for a while. Swimming and talking. They ate a bit of what Keith had packed. Lance was a bit confused with the flavors and dryness.
Keith smiled and looked at the horizon. "Oh god. I-I-I have to go." He packed everything up and left with the dog without another word.
He got back to the boat and got everything in just before his crew got in.
«Time skip several years»
Keith looked out at his crew. He was the captain since his parents had moved on. He had replaced the crew to let them live the rest of their lives peacefully on an island.
"Crew. Prepare to leave to stock. Their expecting us there in just a few minutes."
They had come to this island for materials almost every time. The crew noticed, but never knew why. And the captain wasn't with them in the markets.
Keith smiled. He knew exactly who was waiting for him.
The boat docked and the crew left. Keith let out a whistle. "Cosmo!" The dog came to his side and left the boat with him.
The two walked along the shore for a bit, before stopping at a familiar flat rock. Keith sat down and looked at the water.
"Oh Laaance~" he called out.
There was a splash in the water. Lance arose from it and perched himself on the rock.
"Babe! You're back!" He smiled and kissed his cheek.
"Of course I'm back. I'll always come back."
And that's that. I'm sorry it took so long. I was on vacation and had a huge writing block. Hope you guys enjoyed.
