Harry couldn't sleep that night.
Even with the drugs in his system, he couldn't find his peace with sleep. They did nothing to numb out his emotions, his mind continuously being consumed by Allie's sick form.
Waves of guilt were hitting him as he thrashed around in bed, deciding a late night stroll was what he needed to calm his nerves.
Throwing on sweats and a thick sweatshirt, Harry rushed out of his house that finally belonged to him again, the feeling of the cool fall wind nipping at his face. It was chilly, but the chill felt good to Harry.
He found himself walking towards the clinic, surprised that the doors were unlocked at this hour.
But he wasn't surprised to see Luke just outside of Allie's room.
"Go home Harry." He said, standing up on his feet from the chair he sat in.
Harry thought it was funny that although Allie was no longer in charge, the Guard was always at her side.
"You know, I am so tired of people telling me to leave."
"Go home." Luke repeated himself.
"Is that anyway to talk to your mayor?" Harry smirked, a challenging glint in his eyes.
"It's two in the morning and Allie is asleep. Whatever you have to say to her can wait a few hours."
"How is she? Is she doing better?" Harry's tone and expression softened at the mention of the unconscious blonde in the guarded room.
Luke was suspicious of Harry's concern for Allie, but he dismissed it right away. He assumed Harry was only acting like this because he was the one that discovered the kind of state Allie was in.
"Her fever has gone down. She's eaten a little bit. She'll be fine in the morning."
Harry couldn't help but smile a little bit, nodding to himself. "Good... Good."
"You know it wasn't your fault. What happened to Allie."
Harry's teeth clenched together at Luke's words as he stared at the closed door, his hands in fists.
"Yeah, whatever. Just call me when she gets up in the morning." Harry said as he turned and walked off.
-
Allie opened her eyes slowly, thankful that the shutters were closed on the windows and that the light was off in the room.
She was surprised to find that her surroundings were different. She felt like she could finally breathe, that got a good night's sleep for the first time in a long time.
And it was then that she remembered she was at the clinic. Harry had taken her to the clinic.
She looked down to her right, a hand clamped around her forearm, his head resting on her leg. It was hard to see, but she had expected this sleeping figure to be Will, but she knew seeing him was out of the question. And besides, this person's comforting touch didn't feel like Will.
The fingers wrapped tighter around Allie's forearm when she adjusted her position carefully, almost in fear that she would escape. She squeezed this male's arm gently in response, causing him to stir in his sleep and turn his head.
His face was now visible to her. Even though it was mostly dark in the room, Allie could make out the distinct, familiar features of this man. Sleeping he looked most at peace, his expression innocent and calm.
Allie was shocked that Harry was right in front of her in his most vulnerable state, holding on to her arm the way he did when she came to see him in bed six months ago. Seeing Harry in that depressed state concerned her to the point where she thought she cared for him, but she masked her feelings with a tough demeanor, telling him to get up or his rations would be cut.
She knew that he felt bad for seeing her in the sick state that she was in yesterday. She knew that that was the reason he was here, right now, at her side.
Unknown to Allie, Harry hadn't slept a wink and came back to the clinic four hours later to be at her side when she woke up. Luke had taken pity on Harry and allowed him to stay with Allie, not that he had much of a choice since he did tell him to come back in a few hours. And Harry was after all, one of the mayors.
Harry knew the risks he was taking for being here with the traitor. But he knew the truth, that Allie couldn't be further from a traitor, but it was him that betrayed her instead.
Allie brushed her thumb against Harry's arm, watching his sleeping form.
She looked around for a clock, the faint light coming in through the shutters letting her know that it was morning time. Perhaps around 8, she assumed. She glanced at the shut door, knowing there was a guard on the other side. Not that she'd try to escape, anyway. It was a small society. They'd find her eventually.
She sighed, running her free hand through her hair in thought. Allie knew that they would keep a closer eye on her. She hoped that word hadn't gone out to anyone, especially Will, that she had gotten ill and was rushed to the clinic.
Allie didn't want to wake up Harry as she continued to watch him. This was the first time she had ever seen him content. He didn't look like an asshole, but an angel, which caused an amused smile to spread on her face.
She shut her eyes, the feeling of Harry's hand on her arm soothing her to drift back to sleep.
-
Harry rose slowly when he heard the door open. He blinked rapidly, adjusting to his surroundings.
It was Kelly who walked in, merely to check up on Allie's status. Allie was still sound asleep as Kelly approached her, not surprised that Harry was at her side. Luke had told her before she went in.
"Sleep well?" She whispered to Harry as she checked Allie's temperature.
"I guess." He replied tiredly, realizing then that his hand was on Allie's forearm. Kelly had eyed that which caused him to pull his hand away from Allie.
"What are you going to do with Allie when she's better?" Kelly asked.
"I don't know."
"If you decide to put her back in the wine cellar, you're just as bad as Campbell." She said, anger flashing through her eyes.
"I wasn't going to."
The thermometer beeped as Kelly checked the reading.
"What does it say?" Harry asked.
"101. It was at a 106.4." Kelly tucked the thermometer away, handing Harry an ice cold water bottle.
"Make sure she drinks that when she wakes up. That is, if you'll still be here."
"Thank you, Kel."
Kelly nodded at him as she turned and approached the door. She placed her hand on the handle, hesitating to open it before she turned and looked at Harry.
"I don't know what's going on between you and Campbell, but for your safety, you should stay away from him."
Harry's eyes widened in surprise at Kelly's warning. She turned back around and left the room. Harry knew that she must have seen him with Campbell yesterday. He knew that she already assumed they were planning something from the times she had come to check up on Harry only to see Campbell there already. The thought that Kelly saw him and Campbell last night made Harry uncomfortable. He didn't want her or anyone else speculating that they had plotted the removal of Allie and Will. That it was all a lie and Allie wasn't planning on stealing the votes in the election.
Allie stirred awake, her eyes opening gradually to meet Harry's concerned ones.
He gave her a small smile as she stared at him in thought, her eyes then moving to the spot on her arm where he had held on to her.
"Hey, Allie." He spoke.
She pushed herself up so she was sitting up, pushing the blanket off of her body. It was then that Allie realized she was in a tank top and shorts.
Allie didn't even bother to cover herself up since Harry had already seen all of her.
"What are you doing here, Harry?"
