You know when cold air flushes the warmth from your body entirely and the hair on your skin reacts so intensely. Like the instincts in your mind are communicating to the rest of your body about what's going to happen next. Yet you have no idea what kind of impact you're facing. That's the beautiful danger chills have on humans. They're mysterious and driven to give you a physical sense of lust, excitement, or fear. As for my case, utter terror took over and captivated my body as those sirens blared off into the salty ocean sky.
Chaos erupted, but did I have the strength to move? Of course not.
I didn't know what it meant; I just knew that the goosebumps electrifying my muscles repeatedly were responsible for communicating with my instincts.
There were hundreds of screams and heartbreaking cries mixed with the alarming bells and sirens. Vibrations shook the wooden floorboards as the early night crowds ran the opposite way I was facing. Mothers took their children and men followed yet I stayed, glued to the drifting ground until the first bump crushed the outer walls below us.
"Run girl!"
A man's shoulder finally knocked me out of complete shock and I flew to the floor, hitting the surface hard on my spine. I was scrambling to stand again under the scattering force of bodies running in and out of different directions everywhere. I felt the weight of the ocean shift beneath me and slowly people started running upward on the docks. I unintentionally started sliding towards the water line with help from the angry gravity. The speed of my hips slid down the splintering wood and crashed against other strangers as we all glided into a developing slope. It was madness.
"Grab hold of something!" A shaking yell called out.
I felt a hand grab my ankle and pull me down with the floor's splinters scratching at the straps of my blue sundress. I looked down and witnessed a woman holding onto my foot for dear life before her fingertips accidentally unlatched from my sandal. Her bright blue eyes widened in fear and she released. It wasn't until I realized that she was staring off beyond me when the second wave hit us from behind. Waves knocked against the boat's edge and collapsed swiftly over the rails, flushing cargo and more people down with it. The ship was suddenly nothing but a small grain of sand, plunging down the earth's drain and into a black hole.
Here I am paralyzed in thought, and here we all are sinking in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
