The_awkward_penguin’s Theory:

Alexa died. The shock of the water, the terror, all of the previous events caught up with Abriana and made her pass out, not die. That would be her body trying to save her.

However, the force of the kick to Alexa’s face most likely cracked her jaw and nose, killing her. She fell back into the water, drowning. Her death would have to be ruled accidental because there is no where near enough evidence to prove murder/culpable homicide.
