october eighth,
later that day
"how much bread can you eat?"
he looked up at me, face full of soup and bread. he scarfed down what was left in his mouth before answering me.
"how much do they sell?" paul smiled deviously at me, i stared at him in disgust. "only joking."
i nodded and scraped the rest of my macaroni and cheese from my bowl, slurping it right down. "we need a plan," i started. "you can't stay in twenty-twenty forever,"
"why not? i like it here," paul took a small drink of dr pepper after he said this. "how about you go back and replace me, and i'll replace you!"
"that's genius, paul, really. i just don't think i can pass for a twenty-two year old man," i told him with furrowed eyebrows. panera was mostly empty that day.
"can i have just one more day here? it's fun not being famous!" paul have me his famous doe-eyes, but i was quick to defend myself.
"as much as i want you to stay, i'm afraid i'll do something that will mess up the space-time-continuum loop," i bit my nails anxiously. "trust me, i'd much rather have you stay than go. i just don't think i'm a good person to be stuck with..."
"well, you are so far," paul took another drink and looked me straight into my eyes. i rolled them and scoffed. "it's true, y'know."
"i disagree, but, thanks," i said, stirring my tea with my straw.
"i don't even know how i got here," he acknowledged. "i fell asleep in my hotel room... and, i woke up here!"
i smiled weakly. "maybe it's magic..."
he nodded and finished his drink quickly, burping loudly. i hurriedly shushed him and started laughing as people began to notice.
"maybe i could just stay with you forever." paul smiled.
"we should go," i uttered under a laugh, grabbing my book bag.
we bounded out of panera with lots of energy. i felt happier than i usually did. i never had that much energy and motivation to do things like that until that day. he was a great guy. he made me feel special.
"where are we going?" he shouted as we ran down the new york sidewalks in the pouring rain.
"i don't know!" i yelled with exclamation.
i looked over at him and saw him looking at me with a carefree expression. i really felt like we could do just about anything, and i wanted to. he slowed down on the sidewalk and began panting heavily.
i slowed along with him, putting my hands on my thighs and leaning over with a stitch in my abdomen. he seemed to feel the same, considering the look on his face. he squinted his eyes towards the floor, rain trailing down some small strands of his hair onto his face.
my hair was completely soaked as well. it fell over my face, much like his. mine was quite longer, though. luckily, i wore my raincoat and jeans, so i was dry underneath. paul, however looked to be drenched in rain.
