________________________________

I pull out of Creekside Elementary and before I turn onto the main road, I send a quick text to Cassie.
Sorry I'm late. I'll be there in 20 minutes.
-Jolie

Okay, hurry. Mrs.Willey is about to take attendance. If your lucky you can just say you were in the bathroom and not get detention for being late.
-Cassie

Alright!see you soon.
-Jolie

Cassie and I have been inseparable since the day we met in foster care, we were about 12. She had been through a lot,  and it was rough for her to adjust to her new surroundings. Cassies mom had passed from a car accident and having no other family she was put into the system. Cassie isolated herself from everyone, she would barely eat, and when she had to talk she was very quiet. She looked so fragile, like if anyone spoke to her too loud or if someone bumped into her she would just break. Cassie has changed a lot, gotten stronger and I'm proud of her.

She's with a great family now, she got adopted a couple months later, while I was put with my foster parent, Amber when I was almost 14. I never told Cassie about what went on at the house. Her life with her new family just seemed so good I didn't want to ruin it and bother her with my problems.

Yeah sometimes she gets suspicious when she's seen bruises but I always figure out something to say and she brushes it off. Other than that, Cassie and I always have each others backs.

I click off my phone and put my gaze back on the road. After a couple cars pass I see an opening and then pull out onto the road.

I walk into Mrs.Willeys classroom and I spot Cassie in our usual spot. I start walking over to her when I hear Mrs.Willey call my name. Shoot, I thought I could slip past without her knowing.

"Jolie! Come to my desk please." I turn around and give Cassie a look that says help me please and then head over to Mrs.Willeys desk.

"You were late again for the third time this week. That means detention on Friday." All those times I was late is because I was either putting up with Amber or having to take Allison to school.

"I'm sorry Mrs.Willey, I was just in the bathroom."

"For twenty minutes?"

"Uh," I exchange a glance with Cassie, She's holding up a tampon in her right hand, barely over the desk, and pointing to it with her left hand while mouthing "period" - I held back my laugh, she looks ridiculous-"That time of the month, ya know?" I smile and let out a little laugh, hoping she buys it.

Mrs.Willey  sighed and walked over to her attendance sheet, probably marking me present. "This is the last time that this slides, Jolie."

"Yes ma'am." I let out a sigh of relief.

I then made my way over to Cassie, who was putting away all the stuff she dragged out of her bag. "Where'd all that come from?" I ask as I sit down beside her.

"I haven't cleaned out my bookbag in months, and I was trying to find something to excuse you," she pauses, "as usual." She snickers and I elbow her in the arm.

"Thanks Cas, I don't know what I would've done."

She looks up at me, "Hey don't get sappy on me." We both laugh.

Little did she know that I was terrified inside. Last time I got detention Allison was stuck at school until I was able to go and pick her up, and when I got home her mother had already downed a couple bottles of  vodka. I quickly told Allison to go to her room and get ready for bed. Amber got up and stumbled towards me with a empty glass bottle in her hand.
