Like the plague.
That's how Margaret avoided her.
The kiss was short lived when she was pushed away with a look of horror. Carter simply backed away and hauled ass down the stairs. Margaret stayed at the steps for 30 minutes until she finally left. She simply went home. Every day was exactly like the last.
They would see each other from time to time. Margaret would rush past as Carter while she was smiling and laughing with some of their old buddies. It hurt Margaret, not how she was rejected which, yeah, hurts like a bitch, but how they couldn't make it back to where they were.
Margaret came to the conclusion that they were sliding downhill and that kiss triggered an avalanche that wiped everything out of the picture. Including her.
School came back quicker than appreciated, but Margaret had a plan. She wasn't confident about how it would work in the end but she was sure that most immediate problems would be solved. The weeks following up to school were hell. She couldn't get her mind off of Carter. But that's where the plan came to mind... She just needed someone else to occupy her thoughts...preferably a guy.
The walk into school was dreaded but she was confident she could do it. Confident that she would not let the stares and whispers of everyone around her get into her head.
But what she was most unprepared for happened.
Nothing.
No one was looking at her. No one was whispering. It was a regular day. She sighed and silently thanked Him. This was more than she could've asked for. She may not have her old friendships, but it seems that no rumors will damage any new ones.
She thought it through. Finding a guy was no longer needed, but in order to keep her mind off of Carter, the circumstance called for it.
Before the summer had begun, there were three guys that had asked her out and more than that who sounded interested. She just wasn't sure because she had no idea what was going with herself. Margaret missed a few opportunities but she was sure that at least one of them would still like her.
"Hey, Greta," a shout came bounding down the halls. Well, it's like God was on her side. "You free tonight?"
Mikel. He wasn't top on her list but he could do. She just wasn't sure she was ready to handle the pressure of dating the most popular guy in the school. "Um, sure. What is it for?"
"Nothing really. The guys and I just felt like hanging out after school. Jacks place."
"I'm not an idiot Mik. I'm not going to 'hang out' with a group of only boys. I trust you but not everyone else. Maybe next time," and she walked away. Margaret was not going to get caught in their shenanigans again if she had a choice and fortunately she did. Last year she went to go and chill with them and two hours later there were cops at the front door. Apparently, someone had planned on selling drugs that night. Mikey wasn't part of it, but she was still wary of the few friends he still kept around.
The first class of the day was basic geometry with Mrs. Clark. Her hatred for geometry went to the extent that she would go back in time and murder Euclid. The entire class, she wondered 'why can't everything be like algebra?' Simple easy peasy slope-intercept forms and the Pythagorean theorem.
The day ran smoothly up until lunch. Usually, there wouldn't be a dilemma because she would simply sit with Carter, but Margaret wasn't ready for that. Not yet. So, she did the worst thing possible.
She sat by herself.
