On Monday, Charlotte was nowhere to be seen, thoroughly disappointing Margaret. The day passed as usual except she sat with Mikel's friends instead of by herself. The next day was the same and Margaret found herself missing her more and more
"Hey, Greta," Mikel shouted in order to grab her attention. "What's going on in that pretty head?"
"I haven't seen Charlotte since we drove back from the beach. She doesn't respond to texts or calls. I even went to her door and no one answered."
"A little stalkerish if I say so. I hear she used pull stunts like not coming to school for months and her parents would just buy her back in."
His statement created an unexplainable (at least to her) irritation run through her body.
She leveled him with a stare. "Rumors don't make a person."
Mikel's hands went up in defense. "I didn't say they did, and I don't believe all of them, but with so many, there has to be a shard of truth."
Margaret snorted. "She's just a new girl to a small town. We can create an affair from simply seeing two people glance at each other from across the room."
He sighed and put his arm around her. "I know I know. I just don't want you to worry so much. I'm sure she'll be back tomorrow, okay?"
At that moment, Carter sat at the same table just further down. Margaret simply stared and when eye contact was made, Margaret was the first to look away. Mikel's friends had long since excluded her from the conversation, leaving her time to mull over the conversation Saturday night.
*flashity backity*
After Carters truth or dare question, she had stormed off and Margaret followed.
"What the hell is wrong with you, Carter," Margaret yelled.
In Caters angry wake of stomping, they had travelled far away from the school's little camp site.
"Oh," Carter angrily exclaimed. "What's wrong with me? You just entirely avoided what I was really saying back there!"
"Oh, just like you've been avoiding me" Margaret shot back.
"You know that's no-"
"Don't you dare tell me its not true. And it's understandable to avoid me but don't fucking act like you aren't. I know you've been telling the girls that I'm busy afterschool so that you can avoid me. You don't even walk home the same way. I almost got ra -," Margaret shuddered and took a deep breath because what she was going to say was unfair. Her running into those men was not Caters fault.
"I get it, I do. Just," Margaret sighed. "Why would you try to expose me like that?"
"After I ran," Carter started. "I was left with so many damn questions, and I just wanted to hear you say it. That I didn't imagine it."
"So that," Margaret pointed behind her, "was how you planned to talk to me? Over truth or dare?" Margaret was back to yelling.
Their places were now swapped, Margaret was fuming, and Carter was calm.
"You wanted a confession? You get nothing. And I'm so sorry that this so where we stand. You were my everything. Inseparable, but look at this mess. This big fucking mess." Margaret's chest was heaving but she didn't care. She was just tired.
A smug look settled across Carter's face.
"Well, one of the girls told me that your dating Mikel now. Congrats. I only hope you aren't lying to him as hard as you're lying to yourself."

You may have your tea and sip it too. Sorry that I've been gone so long. I literally hate everything about school. And this chapter is hella short only cuz the next one is really long.
