the trees sleep quietly
their skin grayer than the sick moon
their leaves stripped
their hearts wilted and marred
by the ache of winter
they stand with their branches
frozen like old bones
their bodies like carcasses
when will the sun kiss their leaves?
when will the morning make them tremble,
stir their yawning flowers?
when will the light turn them into jewels?
when will the trees breathe again?
