Monday morning. You wanted to die. Was that too much to ask for? You had to struggle to get out of bed again, having slept for perhaps four hours this time. It was longer than usual, true, but at this point you were liable to fall asleep during class.
Not that it fucking matters. It's happened before, and it won't be the last time either.
You were sullen as you got dressed for school, not liking the idea of going at all. Head still pounding you brewed another pot of coffee, filling a thermos with the drink in the vain hopes that it would wake you up.
That fucking dream.... those... those things, with those goddamn teeth...
You winced and stepped out the door. You weren't keen on eating so early in the morning; it made you nauseous. The coffee was enough of a breakfast to suit you as you stepped out the front door, sighing as you began to walk down the sidewalk. You lived close enough to the school to be able to walk, not that your parents would have given you a ride. God forbid they go out of their way to make their only child's life any easier.
You were walking in a semi-daze, and didn't hear another front door open nearby, nor the person rushing out of the house. Not until there was a hand on your shoulder and a gentle "Hey".
You damn near threw your coffee at the bastard as you screeched, whipping around and backing away. It was the guy from the newly sold house across the street; up close he looked a lot cuter, but you were far too tired to focus on being a blushing maiden for the time being. "Don't fucking do that," you spat out, taking a sip of the precious liquid.
"Sorry, I honestly didn't mean to scare you," he spoke. His voice had a melodic quality to it, smooth and calming in a way. "I saw you coming out of your house and I was hoping I could follow you to school...?" he added, a hopeful note in his voice.
Once your fright had dissipated, you frowned a touch. "Yeah, sure, whatever," you agreed. It couldn't hurt to show the new guy to school, right? Then you could dump him off with a teacher and be on your way.
"Great, thanks," he replied with a brilliant smile. "My name's Teddy."
You paused, finally giving the guy a bit more attention. He was wearing a brown hoodie with bear ears on the hood. "That explains the shirt," you commented softly, not quite smiling.
"What? Oh, yeah, well, it was clean...." Teddy trailed off, one hand on the back of his neck. Was he blushing, or did his cheeks just look naturally rosy? It was difficult to tell.
The two of you walked in mostly silence, much to your gratefulness. You weren't in a very chatty mood that morning, and certainly not without reason. Teddy seemed to take the hint and stayed quiet, at least for the most part. "Are you unwell?" he asked after a few minutes of silence.
You shook your head, then shrugged a bit. "I don't sleep very well," you mumbled. As if to prove your point you yawned wide.
"Insomnia?" he asked softly.
"Something like that." You weren't about to reveal the real reasoning behind it. It sounded too stupid.
Soon, too soon, the high school loomed into view, foreboding as it always was. You fucking hated school. None of your achievements were good enough for your mother, so you skated by without the teachers really caring. Truth be told they hardly noticed you, which was just the way you wanted it.
Inside you steered Teddy towards the principal's office, not really bothering to give him an explanation or any sort of direction. "They can help you," you mumbled before scurrying away, your head down, staring at the tiled floor.
"Thank you...." came his voice, trailing from a good distance away already.

Your head was already down in your arms on the desk. Half the day had gone by in a complete blur; you only knew if there was homework or not. Perhaps that was why the teachers didn't mind you seeming lazy; you did your work and didn't cause a disturbance.
Only when the teacher was introducing a new student did you lift your head at long last, not surprised at the sight of Teddy standing there. Of course he would be in your classes. Didn't seem like you would be able to get away from the guy at this point. With a heavy sigh you lay your head back down.
A gentle hand shook you awake, much like before when Teddy had scared the shit out of you. "Hey again," he murmured, smiling and showing off a dazzlingly white set of teeth.
You grunted, noncommittal, and laid your head back down. Couldn't this kid leave you the fuck alone?
Fuck, why am I being so nasty? He's new. He seems normal.
A lone scrap of paper fluttered onto your desk. There, in neat lettering, was a phone number and Teddy's name beneath it. He had even doodled a little bear face, complete with a top hat and bow tie. You vaguely recalled yesterday, with the other new neighbor and how he had been wearing a top hat. Did he have a bow tie as well? You couldn't remember.
Heaving another sigh you added the number to your contacts, hoping that you wouldn't have to use it. But Teddy gazed at you until you rolled your eyes and texted him so he could have your own number. [Are you happy now?] you wrote, frowning just a touch.
[My brother wants to meet you. He says it's polite to meet the new neighbors, and so far you're the only one nice enough to talk to me.]
This didn't faze you. Your entire neighborhood was full of snooty, bitchy, nosy people. Your parents included. They wouldn't be too keen on being neighborly when there were new people around. Not until they got a good feel for them first.
You hesitated, then shrugged. [Sure. I can't come up with a reason not to go.]
[Don't force yourself. Just stop by after school if you want.]
The only thing you wanted was a nap, but you didn't really feel like killing the new kid's kindness. So you had made up your mind to go.
How were you supposed to know that things could only get worse from there?
