•Chris POV•
"I'm sorry but we can't release her unless there is a parent or guardian to sign the discharge papers."
"I don't see why you can understand this. Those people that bought her in here are supposedly her adoptive parents but they beat on her. I'm not letting her go back to that." I explained for the umpteenth time to this broad. I've been at the check out desk for at least fourty five minutes trying to let them release Chantal.
"I understand that sir bu-,"
"Nah. You don't understand." I interrupted her. "She just found out last night that those aren't her parents. For seventeen long ass years she has been abused mentally, physically and all of the above. All I need from you is a little slip of paper that says she can be released. That's all."
"Sir, I one hundred percent see where you are coming from. The only thing is that I can not release her to you because you aren't a relative and she is a minor. Now if she were to be 18 I could do that but she is only 17. If you can find a relative of hers then I will be able to release her, but until then, I'm sorry."
I ran my hands through my curls and sighed. As soon as I was about to say something else, I felt my phone ring in my pocket. Walking away from the desk, I pulled it out and answered.
"What?"
"Who you think you talking to boy?" Ma asked on the other end of the phone.
I chuckled a little and took a seat on one of the chairs they had in the lobby.
"My bad. Hello, Ma. How are you?"
"That's better and I'm doing alright. I tried calling you earlier but you didn't pick up. I figured you were in school or something." She explained.
"Yeah I was earlier. I'm at the hospital right now with.. Err Uhmm.. A friend. A friend of mine is in the hospital." As soon as I said that, an idea flashed through my mind.
"Ma' can you do me a favor right quick?"
-_-_-_-_-
"Ok you're free to go Ms. Smitten. I apologize for the inconvenience. Nurse Samantha's a little new and doesn't know all of the exceptions just yet."
I forced a smile upon my face as Chantal and I waited for Ma', or in this case, Chantals aunty, to sign the release papers.
I told mom what was going on ,leaving out the whole confused relationship thing between Chantal and I, and she was down with the plan I came up with. She would come in here raising hell claiming to be Chantals blood aunts. When the doctors tried to look up the information, Ma was to start a scene. Eventually the doctors would get tired of her and just release Chantal to us and go on about their business. At first she thought it wouldn't work but look at us now, ten second from walking out of the Hospital trouble free.
"Mhmmm. Just let us go, please." Ma' snapped causing a slight chuckle to slip from my lips.
"Ok. Well you are free to go and again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience."
We walked out of the hospital with Chantal trailing slowly behind us. Slowing up my pace, I began walking with Chantal.
"What's wrong?" I asked gently wrapping my arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer.
She looked up at me and shrugged a little before replying.
"What if they find me?"
"Who?"
"David and Rashel."
"Your parents?"
Her body stiffened under my arm as she shook her head. "Those ARE NOT my parents."
I ran my free hand over my face and stopped once we got to my car.
"Wait right here. Imma go talk to my Ma' right quick then I'll be back."
I jogged over to my mother who had a sour look on her face and her arms crossed her chest.
"You had me come all the way out here for one of your little girlfriends?" She spat.
"One, she's not my girlfriend and two, you were the only one I knew that could get her out," I began to explain," look, she's going through a lot right now and I just... I just want to help her aight?"
"You like her."
I scrunched my eyebrows together and shook my head."It's not even like that. Like I said before, I'm just trying to help her."
"Awful 'lot of help for someone you don't like. How old is she anyway? She look young."
I took a quick glance behind me and watched as Chantal stare off into space waiting for me. Turning back around to face my mother, I ran my hands over my face deciding right now would be as good as any other time to tell her the truth.
"She's 17. She's one of the students at the school I'm doing my community service at. She just found out last night that she was adopted and her adoptive parents have been abiding her pretty much her whole life." I finished and took a deep breath waiting on her to dat something.
"Ma-,"
"Seventeen?! Christopher Maurice Brown! You're twenty-five!"
"You think I have realized that? I did. That's beyond the point though, I want to help her. I'm not letting her go back to that house just so that they can keep hitting on her."
"Then what're you going to do Mr.SaveTheWorld?"
I rolled my eyes and shook my head ignoring her smartness.
"She's going to stay with me unt-,"
"Like hell she is! You're out of your mind if you think I'm going to let that little girl stay with you. I already know y'all got something going on and I am NOT about to become a grandmomma anytime soon. She'll stay with me until we get something figured out. Bring yall asses to my house before I change my mind." Mumbling something about being crazy, she walked over to her car while fumbling for her keys in her purse.
I made my way back to my car to see Chantal asleep in the passenger side. I smiled a little while watching her before pulling out of the hospital parking lot and down the road to Ma's house.
