~Maimouna's POV~
Yah, so after me and Tatiana's 'fight' we just talked throughout the whole of Lunch.Mostly it was the asking me questions about my life in South Africa and how to pronounce my name.
I explained that in South Africa we don't have lions as pets and we do ride giraffes to school. It really is quite different to America especially the curriculum (things you learn in school). I had to get a tutor before coming to school cause I had to catch-up all the thing I missed.
I also taught them how to pronounce my name."So the first thing you say is 'may' as in May the month, then 'moo' like a cow says moo but don't say moooo just say moo and say 'na' as in na."
"So your name is, May-moo-ne?" Ashley asked in confusion.
"No, May-moo-na," I said in a calm voice. I don't get mad when someone pronounces my name wrong because I know my name is not the easiest to pronounce
"So, May-moo-na?" She asked.
"Yes, now say it faster like, Maimouna," I say it as if it's the simplest name in the world. Ashley just stared at me completely dumbfounded.
"Ash, you okay?" Jacob asked looking at his twin.
She looked at her brother," No, I'm good it's just going to take me awhile to pronounce her name but I can start now." She gave me a heart warming smile before continued," So is it May-mon-na?"
"No." I responded.
"Mia-moo-na?"
"Nope."
"Mayo-mou-na?"
"Try again."
"May-Mona-Lisa?"
"How does that even have anything to do with my name?" I asked confused.
"I don't even know I'm just trying. May..."
" I'm sorry but I have to stop this," Tatiana said while giving me an apologetic look." None of us are ever gonna say your name right, except for Hakeem who somehow is fluent in African names."
" No, I just got a great memory," he says with a sense of achievement in his voice and winks at me.
Tatiana just rolled her eyes," Don't listen to him. The point is none of use can say your name and you need a nickname." She looked at her friends," Any suggestions?"
As if a light went on in Kamila's head. She suggested," Her nickname can be Maria."
Tatiana gave her that 'are you for real' look and said," Kamila, everyone here knows your dog's name is, Maria."
I look at Kamila trying to hold-in my laughter ,"You wanted to name me after a dog."
"Sorry, your name starts with an M and Maria starts with a M," Kamila says in an apologetic tone.
"Anymore suggestions," Tatiana said in a annoyed voice.
We all started thinking when a something clicked in Jon Ming's eyes."Were you born in May,"he asked me.
"Yah, why do you ask?"
Jon Ming had a big smile on his face." That's great. Your nickname can be May, but we'll spell it with an I instead of a Y."
Justin looks at Jon Ming with approval." That's a great idea. So her official nickname will be Ma..."
Before he could finish his sentence, but I interrupted him." Wait, if I'm going to have a nickname, everybody else should to''
"Yah, she right," Justin says," my nickname is Just, Prosper's Prosp, Hakeem's Hak, Kamila's Kam, Rodrigo's Rod, Ashley's Ash, Jacob's Jay, Jon Ming's JM And Tatiana's Tati." Justin started panting after saying that long sentence. Justin looked up at me then asked," Since we all have nick names can yours be Mai now?"
I gave him a heart warming smile,"Of course." And just like that my school name became Mai.
