The next day I woke up with three things on my mind: that I was hung over (again), my parents were going to kill me (again), and that I was still incredible confused about Jared (again). It seemed I was always getting myself into these situations lately, and I noticed begrudgingly that it had all happened since Jared had arrived.
I stretched on my bed, my limbs cracking as I stretched out my back muscles. Grey light peeked through my curtain and I could hear the faint sound of the rain tapping against the window.
I sighed and got out of bed, deciding I should probably go downstairs to face the confrontation that was sure to come from my parents. They hadn’t been thrilled about me going to the dance, especially due to the fact that I had behaved so badly in the last one, they had only just let me go because of my A in the latest Biology test I had taken, so I thought it was best not to mention the fact that I was being forced into being Jared’s date, a boy they had warned me off as soon as they had heard his name.
“Good morning sleepy head.” My Dad beamed as he saw me walking down the stairs.
I froze, my eyes narrowing as I watched him turn over the page of his newspaper, his coffee mug steaming beside his hand. I became even more confused when Mum smiled at me over her shoulder before she continued to wash the dishes.
“Good morning.” I replied uneasily.
“How was the party?” Dad questioned. “Did you have fun?”
“It was alright…” I mumbled.
I was baffled by the situation, the last thing I had imagined to see were my parents smiling at me and quietly going about their daily routine, I had been preparing myself to come down stairs to an angry mob, my Mum and Dad at the front with pitchforks in their hands and fire blazing in their eyes.
“Just alright?” Mum repeated, her tone slightly smug. “Was that why you came home so early?”
Now I was completely lost. I had come home three hours after my curfew, how could they possibly have missed that fact? Were they trying to trick me? Were they giving me a chance to admit that I had disobeyed them?
“What are you talking about?” I blurted out, not being able to take the tension anymore. I felt as if I were being interrogated, and in this case both of my parents were playing good cop, it was eerie.
Mum and Dad shared a puzzled glance. Mum opened her mouth but her attention became diverted by Adrianna stomping down the stairs. I glanced over my shoulder to see her coming to stand by me, her blonde hair messy and her eyes slightly bloodshot.
“Is there any toast?” Adrianna mumbled tiredly.
Mum nodded and inclined her head in the direction of the kitchen counter where a plate of toast sat. Adrianna huffed and grabbed the plate, nearly tripping over the chair in her tired state as she sat down by the table.
“Honey, what do you mean what are we talking about?” Mum continued, “Adrianna told us you came home early.”
I stared at Adrianna in confusion. She gave me a look as if to say ‘play along with it you idiot’, but I continued to stare at her with furrowed eyebrows, my mouth hanging open.
