Somehow, I managed to get back in the hang of my old life, and this time I was busier than ever before. Being out there in the universe made me more creative, gave me more potential and I found myself all over the place with work.
Currently, I worked in the laboratory, in the hospital, attended conferences and meetings in other countries, volunteered for all sorts of things including emergency services, and, with UNIT losing their official scientific advisor, filled in for the Doctor in alien investigations sometimes too. Oh boy, was I busy. I was lucky because I'd dropped myself home only a day after I'd left, meaning there was nothing to catch up on.
In the laboratory, at this point in time, I worked in more industrial line work. Electricity seemed to be JaguarLabs thing of the moment, and so I worked on the communications system, as in the wiring and set up of the power lines. It was hard work but worth it, seeing human enthusiasm at the increased levels of power. As I'd finished before schedule, I consequently worked on more efficient energy converters for power stations, and was commended in the papers for my effort. I'd discovered that technology especially, but also chemistry, was my strongpoint; I only dealt in biology when in the hospital.
Eventually the inevitable happened, and the Doctor got a new companion. Sarah Jane Smith, her name was. She was a journalist and I knew her because her aunt was a scientist if worked with, Lavinia Smith. When the Doctor dropped into UNIT while I was there with her, I was positively ecstatic for him. Honestly, Sarah was one of the nicest and brightest girls I'd ever met. We got along fabulously, and she was a fantastic help to the Doctor.
So, soon after Sarah's arrival into companionship, an intriguing alien invasion happened. Dinosaurs, in London. Of course, it was all Mike Yates fault. He was a UNIT soldier, a captain and I'd never liked him but it was as if he'd gone insane and decided that the human race needed to be better or some rubbish like that. The Doctor, Sarah and UNIT quickly out a stop to it though, and that was it for that invasion, and also Mike Yates. Poor guy.
I have to admit, at least at some point; I actually really missed traveling with the Doctor. Every night as I lay in bed I would think of the memories I had, precious and beautiful, about the TARDIS, about the planets, about the stars, and about the Doctor. But I knew that I couldn't travel with him full-time and I was managing alright on my own, and that was all that mattered.
Soon I got quite a shock when the Doctor died, again! But this time on earth. I wasn't there. They called me while I was out of town from UNIT, after the Doctor had been missing for weeks to say he was there but he was dying. Next thing I knew he'd regenerated and was stopping a maniacal robot from killing people. Typical Doctor. Then, by the time I was back in London, he'd left already, taking Sarah Jane and some Navy doctor named Harry Sullivan with him. The Brigadier seemed quite unamused by the new Doctor, and Sergeant Benton, who I quite liked, showed me a picture of him. I had to fight the urge to laugh. He had a stupid toothy grin, ridiculous curly brown hair and a multi-colored scarf that looked to be about seven meters long. His eyes bulged out of his head but he still seemed to emanate that sense of ancient wisdom, despite his newfound childishness. Since I could tell all this from the photo, I wondered what he was like in person.
And, of course, in lieu of the Doctor I was approached by the Brigadier about being scientific advisor.
"Well, the Doctor's off at who-knows-where with Miss Smith and Dr Sullivan, and I don't expect him to return any time soon. So I just wanted to know if you'd fill the gap for us, if you have the time." he told me, and I nodded, contemplating it. "If there's one thing the Doctor has taught me, it's that science leads, and I would rather like you to set up an entire science division of UNIT."
A challenge, but one I was willing to rise to. "Of course." I told the Brigadier with a grin. "I'll just show you my timetable and you can tell me where to fit into yours."
