Klaus lay in bed, the silk sheets and black comforter pulled over his head. He'd been lying in bed for hours. Days even. It was Memorial Day. And the anniversary of the day Klaus lost Dave Katz, the love of his life.
Diego had had enough of this utter crap. He walked in, and picked up his brother into his arms. "That's it. You're going down and eating. I don't even get why you're being so pitiful." Klaus glared at him with tears welling in his eyes. Diego tensed and nodded slowly. "Oh. I'm sorry."
Klaus sat up slightly, clinging onto Diego. "You shouldn't even be strong enough to hold me."
"Get used to it."At the breakfast table, a full meal was placed on the five plates. It was blueberry waffles and soft-boiled eggs. Klaus' favorite. Klaus turned to Grace. "What's all this?" He questioned. Grace smiled sympathetically.
"Breakfast." She answered simply and sat down beside Diego's chair. Klaus shook his head, confused.
"But it's my favorite."
"Are you implying that you're not good enough?" Allison playfully teased, poking Klaus' arm before going to her seat. "Because you are. So stop it."
Klaus smiled slightly. But as he looked down at his waffles, he couldn't help but feel a small feeling of bittersweetness. He felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked over his shoulder. There stood his younger brother, Ben. He was mostly translucent. Nobody else but Klaus could see him, as he had unfortunately died when they were children. But, due to things that happened a few months ago (stopping the Apocalypse and Luther died) his siblings knew he was there most of the time. So, there was always an empty seat beside him where Ben sat.
"Hey, I know today's going to be hard, but I'm here." Ben smiled and sat down in his seat, taking his brother's hand. "We're going to make it easy for you." Klaus smiled at him and went to hug him. He usually fell right through him, and so he prepared himself for that. But instead he felt his arms wrap around his shoulders. He actually managed to hug him!
Ben smiled proudly. "You're getting more sober!" He paused a moment. "When was the last time you smoked or-"
"Three months, little brother." Klaus grinned before pulling away and tackling his waffles. "Breakfast was amazing," he said to his mother after he finished. He jumped up out of his seat and went to the kitchen. He was going to do the dishes, but Vanya stopped him with a gentle smile. "Let me do this, please." Klaus smiled a bit but shook his head.
"I can help at least," he suggested.
"Sorry brother, but you need to get dressed." Diego grinned as he swooped Klaus into his arms. He walked into Reginald's room and sat Klaus down on the bed. Diego then started to rummage through the wardrobe. After ten minutes he had chosen an outfit. "Klaus, take this to the bathroom and change into this." He handed Klaus a suit. It was grey with a black tie. Klaus made a face.
"What's this for?" Klaus asked as he walked into the bathroom and went to change. Surprisingly, it fit. He walked out to find that Diego had left the room. But, what he did find, was a small yellow piece of paper where Diego was sitting. He walked over, confused. He picked up the piece of paper and tried to read Diego's scribbled handwriting.
"Look," the paper read. "I know you hate the suit. But just trust me. Come out to Five's van. We're going out."Yes, Diego remained to be as vague as ever. But Klaus did walk out to the van. In the van, his siblings were also decked out to the nines. Vanya and Allison wore matching short black dresses. Diego had lost his classic black jacket and skinny jeans, and in place, a red suit hugged onto him. Five wore a black suit as well, but nothing too fancy.
This only piqued Klaus' interest. The only person who wasn't dressed up was Ben, as usual. Klaus climbed into his seat, the passenger seat in the front. Diego started to drive. He drove for approximately half an hour, give or take. The van stopped moving and pulled up in the parking lot of the Veteran's Memorial Center.
Tears jumped to Klaus' eyes as he got out of the car. Diego took his hand and led him to where a crowd of people had gathered. They were celebrating the people they'd lost, and then some. Klaus could hear people telling their kids stories of their grandfather, mother, or father. Klaus listened for a bit and slowly started to smile. He wasn't the only one who had lost people. After a while, Diego took the, back to the van. He drove off again, but this time they went to one of the flower shops. Vanya and Allison went in.
They came back ten minutes later with five bouquets of roses, one of them being black. Allison handed Klaus the bouquet of black roses.
"What are these for?" He questioned. He held them gently and turned to Diego when Allison didn't answer. Diego didn't answer either, but he shook his head gently. Frustrated, he fell backwards into his seat. After a moment, Diego started driving again. This time, the van pulled up at the graveyard. Klaus looked at Diego, confused. "What are we doing here?"
Diego smiled sadly and gently kissed his head. "I think you have someone waiting for you to visit." He murmured. Klaus nodded and got out.
Five got out of the van and took his brother's hand. He led him to Dave's grave. Klaus let go and rushed over. He knelt down and started to sob."Oh Davey, I miss you!" He cried as he hugged the grave. "I haven't seen you in so long and I just really want you to hold me again." He paused and placed the roses down.
"I think you'd be proud of me, liebe. I've been sober for three months and I was really helpful during the apocalypse!
"I haven't stopped thinking about you. Did you know I died? Yeah, and I saw dear old Daddy. Not you, my father." Klaus paused and laughed a bit.
"You know, I thought I'd be really depressed today, but my family took me to the Memorial Center, and Allison and Vanya got my flowers to give you. So, while I'm still really depressed without you, I'm happy.
"Oh, and I hugged my brother!" Klaus giggled, rubbing my eyes. "The dead one I told you about. Ben." He specified.
He sighed longingly and stood up. "I love you. And I can't wait to see you again. Goodbye Davey." He leaned over and kissed the grave. He walked over to Diego, who then gave him a hug."Happy Memorial Day, brother." Diego kissed his head. The family walked back to the van after everyone else gave up their flowers.
Later that night, as Klaus was getting ready for bed, he felt arms wrap around his waist in a hug. "Hey." He felt a breath behind his ear. Klaus let out a small giggle."Who's that?" Klaus asked before turning around.
There stood Dave Katz in all his glory, just a bit dead. "You hurt me," he joked. "Pretending you don't know me and acting like I'm dead."
Klaus pouted as Dave ruffled his hair. "Well, you are dead. And... hi." He smiled as he placed a kiss on Dave's cheek.
"Hi. How are you doing, baby?"
Klaus blushed a bit at Dave's old nickname. "How long can you stay?"
"As long as Ben can. Oh, he's also glaring at me." Dave giggled a bit.
Klaus' eyes lit up and he beamed. "Then I'm great!"
Dave huffed as he gently shoved Klaus away. "Because Ben looks like he wants to pummel me back to life?"
"No! Because you can stay here with me."
"Aww, you have a heart."
"Shut up!""Make me!"
Klaus lay down on the bed that was no longer merely just his. He blushed a deep scarlet. "Later." He smiled tiredly at the love of his life, Dave Katz, before blinking sleep from his eyes.
"I love you," Dave yawned as he lay down beside Klaus, wrapping his arms around his waist.
"Goodnight Davey."
That night, sleep came easily. And he smiled while he slept, knowing he'd blink awake to Dave being there. Nothing else could make him happier, and nothing could make him frown.
