Waiting Too Long

"I don't know man, I just feel like I've been looking too hard."

Keanu heaved out a long, exasperated sigh, stomping out the still smoldering end of his cigarette with the toe of his boot. He felt like his love life was an endless maze filled with nothing but dead ends- and he was ready to give up. Peering past the chainlink fence, staring out into the endless abyss of the ocean, Keanu began to feel lost. 

"Come on dude, it's only a matter of time until you find yourself a nice girl," Mark, Keanu's best friend, assured him. 

Letting out a breathy laugh, Keanu replied, "Yeah, that's what they all say."

Mark scoffed and patted Keanu's shoulder in a rough, brotherly way. "What do you say we go out tonight? Just me and you. No girls- just a couple of guys being dudes. Would that make you cut all this angsty shit?"

"Alright," Keanu responded, apprehensively. Turning back to watch the ocean, he again began to feel lost.

"I've been waiting too long."

Athena's best friend, Julie, responded with a shrill laugh. "Girl, that is an understatement. You have been waiting for your entire life for a man to come along. You're 21 now, hun, it's about time you found someone."

"You think?" Athena asked, peering over her shoulder to look at Julie.

"Girl, I know," Julie answered, walking over to play with Athena's hair. "Now what we're gonna do is make you up real nice, go to a bar, and find you a nice young man you can have some fun with. That sound good?"

"Alright," Athena responded, apprehensively. She was nervous but she knew she could trust Julie to show her the way.
