"Goo good morning maam. Maam, hard to extract patient Campita ward 12" my intern told me shyly as she enter to our staff pantry and hand me the request and list of the patient from which they had extracted. I move my head to look at her. I was taking a nap there alone. It was past 2 in the morning.
"Okay, Is that all?" I ask
she look at me with fear plastered on her eyes "Ye-yes ma'am. Thank you" I just nod and she turned her back at me leaving the room.
I look down on the list she hand me and paste it to my own copy. They're the first to finish AM warding, but still they haven't get the job done. Almost. I almost want to congratulate them.
Soon, I heard footsteps outside and the hall slowly filled with noise indicating that the interns are back. One by one they enter and hand me their own list of patient they're assigned to extract.
3:45 am. I was checking the list just to make sure that every single patient have their blood extracted and run to analytical section.
It was all done. Hard to extract patients had already been drawn by my selected intern which i was eyeing to be King/Queen of phlebotomy. It was an award given to an intern on the date of their clinical graduation. It is same as best in math when we were in grade school.
What am I? I am Registered Medical Technologist. I do stuff not known by many. Some called us Nurses just because we wear white and scrubs and few who call us Doctors. We don't mind patients calling us doctors though.
"Hey Lisa, Is your shift done? wait for me." Rosé, my best friend/workmate. She is medical technologist as well but she is assigned to the most toxic section in the laboratory. Clinical Chemistry
"Oh. yeah. I'll wait outside" I move outside as fast as i could. I guess we all have it in common. To wait for our shift to end and go home.
I was thankful that time move faster than i thought. Can't still believe it. Just earlier i was checking the list then in a blink here i am, waiting for Rosé to finish her stuff. She might have something to endorse for the next shift.
I am assigned to pre-analytical section where my work is to guide the interns from the most crucial step of phlebotomy. The patient identification. Input of data. Labelling/Barcodes. Everything up until the specimen is ready for analytical section to run. In basic words it is indeed crucial but less toxic than analytical that's why i get to time out as soon as the next duty comes.
"Goodmorning maam" Interns greeting me as they saw me "morning" i greeted them back. What took Rosé too long? I'm getting impatient. Many interns keep coming. It's getting late and i badly wanted to sleep. 16hrs duty sucks. my other workmate ask me to cover for his shift cause he has some errands. And that leave me no choice.
"Oh sorry Lisa, Did i keep you waiting too long?, I have tons of pending requests that i need to finish" Rosé
"Tsk. I should be home by now" I answered her while smirking. She knows me well. and she just laugh it off.
"let's eat first" Rosé told me while we were walking down the hall. I just nodded. Im hungry too.
Rosé chose pasta as her breakfast and i ordered same as well. "So, Lisa how was your own lab going?" I looked at her and put my hands an okay sign for an answer. She keeps talking about how toxic she is last night and i wasn't fully listening to her. I'm too tired.
