Summer was over and I was back in the familiar dorms that I had grown to both love and hate. The California breeze was a much better change of scenery as opposed to the Atlanta heat that had consumed me for the last two months.

I tried my best to do a little soul searching as I spent time with my childhood best friend and her family. For as long as I can remember, we've always spent entire summers on the lake at her grandparent's cabin. Nothing too crazy, just her family and a few of our other friends who were also in town during the break from college. This summer was different. I felt like we were growing further apart as our lives carried us in two different directions. Most of me couldn't wait to go back to school, but the other part was dreading all the responsibilities that it held.

This year, I was determined to pick a set major. I had to, it was in the guidelines of my scholarship. I needed to overall just get my shit together. No more worrying about boys who don't actually care. No more abusive relationships. Leave Max alone.

I couldn't tell if it was the loneliness of the bare walls or just the pressure of classes starting again that made me already want to fall into my old toxic habits.

Nothing was unpacked yet and as far as I could tell, I hadn't been assigned a roommate this year. I was partially grateful for that, my roommate last year was atrocious, but I knew that I would never have the motivation to hang up all of my decorations without someone riding my ass.

My first class starts in two hours, so far picking afternoon classes seemed like the smartest move I could've made this year.

Sighing before getting out of bed and walking over to the boxes that loomed over me in the tiny room, I began to take everything out. I had to start somewhere.

"Well, well, well. You've been here three weeks and weren't gonna tell us?"

I looked up from my box and was met with my friend's smiling faces.

"Hey Sam. Hi Shane." I set my stuff down and leaned my back against the bed post.

"How have you been? How was your summer?" Sam wrapped me into a hug and I took in the familiar scent of his cologne mixed with his cigarettes.

They seemed like an odd pair of friends, what with Sam and his tattoos and tobacco habits and Shane's nose always poked into a book. But they meshed well together, and somehow I fit perfectly in between.

"Good, just spent time with Alexis." He nodded and then Shane spoke up.

"No roommate this year?" He gestured to the empty half of the room.

"At least not yet. If she's anything like Angela, good riddance." I shrugged and they all laughed at the memory of my awful roommate.

I glanced at the time on my phone, I had forty-five minutes.

"I have a new one this year. He's pretty cool." Sam climbed up onto my bed and tossed my rubber band ball into the air, catching it before it hit his face.

"Oh, yeah. The Hero kid? Yeah, he's cool. Really quiet though."

"Well I'm sure it won't take Sam long to make him come out of his shell. What makes him a hero?" I crossed my arms over my chest this time and waited for an answer from Shane.

"Oh, that's his name. He's all British and weird with his phrases. But he's nice." Sam said from above us both.

"Do you have any classes today?" Shane asked mimicking my gesture with my arms crossed.

"Yeah, English lit in like 30 minutes."

"Oh awesome me too! We can walk together."

"Yeah. For sure!"
