"You know you're not supposed to smoke here, right?" I nudged Sam's boot with my sandal.
He took another puff before rolling his eyes at my comment.
"You'll never get him to quit. He's in too deep." Dylan laughed.
This time I rolled my own eyes as Sam smushed his cigarette butt against the concrete
"I came to see if you had plans tonight? I'm tired of studying. I'm also tired of sharing an empty room. So can you like round up your friends and let's do something fun?"
"We're only two weeks into school and you already want to get wasted." He smirked up at me as I crossed my arms over my chest.
"No, I didn't say that. I just said something fun."
The two guys stood up and over me while Sam shook his head.
"What's up man?" I looked behind me in the direction of the unfamiliar but still recognizable voice.
Hero stood there and stuck his hand out for both Sam and Dylan to smack and shake.
"Hello." He gave me a small nod and I just looked back to Sam.
I didn't want to look at him longer than I had to. He had to know that he was attractive and I wasn't in the mood to hear backlash from Sam about my face turning beet red.
"Hero, this is Emerson. Em this is my roommate." He spoke up, introducing the two of us.
"Yeah we have English lit together, with Shane." I mumbled.
Sam nodded before pulling his phone out of his pocket while three of us remained silent.
"If you're really down to do something tonight, my cousin is throwing a party on the other side of campus. But they get kind of crazy so if you wanted to just watch a movie in your dorm instead, I could still text some people and we could just drink there."
He slid his phone back into his pocket.
I contemplated going to the party, until the vivid memories of last fall semester came flooding back. Suddenly I wanted nothing to do with the idea of Sam getting wasted and beating someone almost to death.
"How about you just bring a movie over and we can hang out?"
"Yeah. The nasty wine you like too?" There was sarcasm in his tone but I know he was genuinely asking.
Dylan chuckled, "Oh my god dude don't open that can of worms."
I rolled my eyes at their picking fun at my awful taste in alcohol, "I'm sorry I was not bred to chug tequila. Some of us have to start somewhere."
"Well we're going to lunch now, do you wanna go?"
I looked from Hero to Sam then back to Hero again, "Do you care?"
"Not at all." He shrugged his shoulders and we all headed in the direction of Sam's car.
He draped his arm lazily over my shoulder as we made the treacherous hike through the student parking lot. I could feel eyes burning into my backside and suddenly, I was self-conscious at how we looked. I brushed his arm off of my shoulder and he gave me an over exaggerated face and shoved me.
I couldn't help but giggle as I stumbled, "Stop, you asshole."
"Don't try to brush off my affection, asshole." He put his arm back on my shoulder and I rolled my eyes.
"I didn't know you had a girlfriend, Sam." Hero spoke up, his voice boomed over our quiet tones and the irritation in his voice took me by surprise.
