Jack and I rushed over to the stables to see Michael and Emily.
We got there and the vet was talking to Michael and we walked over to hear what was wrong. She looked at us as we approached, it was Dr. Calientte.
"Nathan, hi." She said and shook my hand. "Congrats on your win. But it looks like your filly has chipped her knew and has a crack in her cannon bone." she said, I looked at Jack.
"Is she able to recover or comeback to racing?" I asked.
"No, I'm afraid not. I wouldn't risk it. It's better to retire her before she gets hurt even more." She said, I looked at Jack and Michael, who had sad faces on.
"Okay. Let's do it." I said.
-2 months later-
I stopped the truck in the drive way at Lanes End Farm, I looked at Michael, Jack, Caitlyn and Nicole, and then opened my door and exited the truck.
I stopped in front of the trailer door, then opened it and saw Emily, Michael came around with the lead and clipped it on Emily and lead her out. She had healed since the Breeders Cup. Announcing that Emily would retire was a lot. She was confirmed to reside at Lanes End where other great mares had lived.
I pet Emily's face and a tear slid down my cheek. This was goodbye for now. We would definitely visit her. I hugged Emily's neck and let go after a while. Emily nuzzled my face and put her head into my chest and then looked at Jack and Nicole and did the same.
Michael lightly pulled on Emily's lead and started to lead her away.
He had quit being our groom to stay with his beloved filly. He wanted to be her caretaker until her last breath.
We all watched in silence as she walked away. She then stopped and looked back at us for a moment then started walking forward again. Everyone went back into the truck except Jack and I. We sat on the trailer watching and waiting for her to disappear.
"It was a fun adventure with her." I said, Jack smiled.
"She was definitely something else. Never be another like her for a long time." He said, Emily entered the stables and left our sight.
But she wouldn't always be gone. She would be with Michael who loved her to death. After a few moments, we got up and entered the truck and drove away in silence.
