After School

The mass of students rushing to escape school gave off the feeling of a tidal wave coming down on the parking lot. Adelaide, Jessica, and I were the little stream that followed the big storm. We always went late to the parking lot: it was more fun that way. We went to my 2012 dark grey 4 Runner to grab my bag for cross country: today would be an easy day considering it was the start of the season so we prepared to just talk and jog the whole time.

Mr. Welling, the head coach, rambled on and on about how this sport took dedication and such nonsense because we all know that people join cross country for one of two reasons. One: their parents made them, or two: they want to hang with friends and not actually run a lot.

As he told us to start our three miles he had us run through the homeless park. This park has been dubbed thee due to the fact that a homeless man once chased us and told us to run faster because we apparently weren't giving enough effort.

We went for a mild pace, maybe 5 miles an hour at best, as we talked about our day.

Jessica went straight to the tea time, "So Adelaide? How was your summer with Adam? 😏."

Adelaide blushed as she responded: "It was actually really fun. I mean who would have thought that actually talking to the guy at the Rose would have worked out for me!"

"Adelaide! I swear to God you are so amazing of course he would love you!!! You just had to get the guts to do something in the first place." I yell as she begins to chuckle.

"Yeah, yeah. You guys are right haha." Adelaide's eyes travel to her feet as she continues, "But it's been really good, and I would say it's time for you guys to meet him."

I stop dead in my tracks. "WHAT!" I am too excited. I have wanted to get to know this kid from the moment he awkwardly grabbed her arm and said excuse me. We go dancing every Sunday night at this place called the Grizzly Rose, and one night he tried to talk to her but she looked at him and basically ran away. But it's all good because it worked out now anyway.

"Yeah. Guys he is really sweet and like such a gentleman. He opens my door and he brought me soup that one week I was sick. I really like him..."

"ADELAIDE. I think I love him hahah." I don't mean to interrupt her but this guy is like something out of a dream.

"Well that may be so... but he is taken ;)"

"OH MY DUCKING GOD! You go gurl!!!" I am legit so happy for her because we told her if she just went for it something might happen and here we are... something happened.

"Woman I am so proud of you. I knew you could do it." Jessica hugs her while instantly congratulating her. It's like me and Jessica are living through her, since neither of us have boyfriends.

"Haha thanks guys. I'm glad you made me actually go for it. Right Jessica?"

"Now what's that suppose to mean?" Jessica's hand finds her hips as she looks at us.

"The Pokémon guy dude!" I scream into her ear.

"Okay, first of Hannah. It's not Pokémon it's Kiki's Delivery Service. Secondly I don't even know the guy so I'm worried what will happen. But I mean maybe I should just go for it." Now it's Jessica's turn to look down searching the ground very thoroughly for nothing in particular.

Within two seconds my head rolls back in laughter, Adelaide is not far behind. We decide to cut our three miles down to two and we turn around early.

The rest of the run was full of trying to convince Jessica to text her mystery manga man, and as soon as we got back we may or may not have stolen her phone. We basically ran that last mile because Jessica chased us for a good half hour. Sadly we didn't know her code, but she didn't know that.

As soon as I laid down to sleep I was met by a fortress of pillows. My head rested on millions of clouds as I thought about the day. This year was really going to be amazing, I just had to watch it all unfold.
