Lonely

Odin is dead, the bifrost was never rebuilt, Ragnarok never happened, New York happened, but since Loki was mind-controlled he was cautiously forgiven for his actions.

***

He'd been alone before. That's how it always was. People were all around him, but none were his friends, none ever trusted him, and he never trusted them back. Even while he lived like this, the hole in his heart was filled.

Until now.

Thor was gone. Thor was the one who always forgave him, and while he didn't always trust the hybrid god, he still forgave. Odin had too, but Loki had felt so betrayed after he found out his true lineage...

Thor had died hating Loki. He still awaited the unspoken words "I forgive you" to be unhung from the bitter air. They never came.

He was stuck on Asgard with Thor's dead body, with the "Earth's Mightiest Heroes", with himself, his thoughts... So alone.

At least the Midgardians had been kind enough to give him a place to stay. It probably wasn't a coincidence that he was in the same building as the heroes, who were always on edge and ready to fight.

So that's how he spent his days, lying on his bed, listening to Earth's strange music in the distance, getting used to the muted voices of the Avengers. Then one day a new voice came. It was small, high pitched, quick, cheerful. It almost lured him out of the room. Almost.

Three weeks later, after hearing the voice nearly every day, jumbled with those of the others, they all stopped. It was silent. Curious, the god stood, made himself presentable, and strutted out of the room into the kitchen.

When he arrived, he was all too surprised to see a young Midgardian child sitting at the bar, eating and reading something.

"Ahem."

The boy jumped and spun around in the stool, cereal dribbling down his chin. His eyes widened further, if possible, when he recognized who stood before him.

"You're Loki!" his voice squeaked as he wiped the milk off his chin.

"I am..." Loki said, taking a seat beside him.

"You killed tons of people!"

Loki cringed. "I did..."

The boy's shocked face disappeared. "Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you."

" It's fine. To be honest I don't regret it. Well, most of it. I guess I kind of regret the whole New York thing, but it-" he was going off into a rambling voice, but he caught himself. " I'm rambling, ignore me."

"No, go on, why would I ignore you?"

"Why not? You hate me and you don't want to-"

"I never said I hated you, New York was an accident. Doesnt everyone know that you were being mind-controlled?"

Loki was surprised at how quick the mortal had  been to make his forgiveness obvious, and it even made him smile a bit. "Unfortunately, no. Hardly anyone knows what exactly went on. I appreciate it though."

"No problem." the boy looked at his wrist, "Oh, I have to go, sorry. Bye, Mr. Loki!"

Loki smiled as the boy darted to the elevator with his things.

As he walked back to his room a smiled played on his lips, pushing harder and harder until he grinned to himself. The hole in his heart was no longer empty.
