"I'm King of the Mountain!" Thor yelled victoriously from his perch atop the back of the throne. The two children, aged 9 and 10, were in the empty throne room of their father, Odin, playing Thor's favorite game, King of the Mountain. They always played that game, it was the only one Thor would do. So if Loki didn't want to be alone, he had play King of the Mountain with his older brother, who never lost.
"You always win!" Loki protested from the bottom of the stairs.
"Of course I do, I'm the older brother and I can tell you what to do. So lose." Thor was still grinning from his spot.
Loki, defiant of his Brother's command scrambled to his feet and lunged up the stairs, grabbing for his Brother's swinging foot.
Thor saw it coming a mile away. With a swift movement, the blonde connected his foot the the face of his younger brother and sent him tumbling down the stairs with a yell of pain.
As he crashed to the floor there was a dull crack, and for a moment Loki could not breathe. He saw a flash of light as his head hit the floor, then it was dark. His vision slowly faded back into color but by then the shock had ended and he could feel the shooting pain from his head and right arm. Enraged, frightened, and very much hurt by his brother's actions, Loki staggered to his feet, green dancing between his fingers. With an angry yell Loki thrust his hands forward with all the power he had within himself. The ball hurtled towards Thor.
Thor's eyes widened and he dove for cover behind a pillar. A second later, there was a deafening crash as the green ball blasted the doors of the empty Odinsleep room. Thor was mostly protected from the blast, but when it exploded Loki was not. Shards of the heavy duty door shot back towards the black-haired boy, most narrowly missing but some clipping his soft skin and one lodging itself in his raised palm. Thor fared much better, only being grazed by a few of the projectiles.
Then all was quiet except the sound of small pieces of falling debris and Thor's heavy breathing. But if one listened carefully and peered hard through the thick, white dust, one could hear the sound of a sobbing boy and that of running feet. If one looked hard enough one could see said boy, standing alone gripping his arm tightly, black hair peppered with white and matted in the back with blood.
The footsteps grew closer, accompanied by the sound of rattling armour.
When the guards came upon the scene they weren't quite sure what the think, but when they saw the crying prince and the other hiding in the shadows they at least knew it wasn't a hostile attack. One ran off the get the Queen, while the others went to check the injuries of the children.
When Odin arrived on the scene his mouth hung open in shock at his destroyed throne room and his two children in the middle of it all.
"Father! Loki tried to kill me!" Thor suddenly blurted as he ran from the corner.
Loki was in too much pain to defend himself and Odin didn't know quite what to say.
When Friga entered the room she had much the same reaction as the King but was snapped out of her stupor when her eyes locked with the watery ones of her little magic apprentice.
"Oh..." She rushed forward to carefully embrace the child. "What have you done?"
"I'll tell you!" Thor yelled "He tried to kill me, that's what!"
"You kicked me down the stairs!" Loki sobbed.
"He tripped! He's just mad he lost at King of the Mountain," the older boy yelled, then grimaced as he stretched the cut in his cheek. "He's jealous!"
