Virat was again tensed up since morning it was their second practice match with Bangladesh. They had performed really miserable in last match. Virat took out his wallet and saw the last picture he clicked with his dad. His dad was always his strength. He kissed the picture. Mahi bhai knowing his Cheeku’s nature before every match went to his room. Mahi Bhai said, “Cheeku close your eyes and think about the best memory of your life!” Virat closed his eyes and saw his childhood where his Dad was teaching him to ride a bicycle. His Dad was running with the pace of his bicycle holding it from the back. Virat was pedalling the bicycle without any fear. His Dad left the bicycle and looking at sight Cheeku riding bicycle on his own and he was smiling. Suddenly Virat turned back and found his dad was waving at him from far and soon Virat fell down losing his balance. He started crying. His Dad ran towards him and picked the crying Cheeku in his arms. Virat was now smiling with tears in his eyes remembering his good old days. Mahi Bhai put his arm around his shoulder and said, “Cheer up Papa’s prince or the crown will fall.” Virat hugged Mahi Bhai tightly and said, “I want India to win the World Cup and dedicate all my good performances to Papa!” Mahi Bhai smiled and just rubbed his back. Mahi Bhai said, “I know you will perform well this World Cup but if someday you don’t perform don’t feel bad, its human life!” DK knocked the room and said, “Hey folks! Are you guys ready, the team bus has arrived.” Virat said, “Oh! DK bhai aap jao hum aate h taiyaar h humlog!” (Oh! DK bhai you go we are coming, we are ready!) DK smiled and said, “Haan haan ajao aplog jaldi!” (Yes come fast you people!) Mahi bhai nodded his head smiling.
All of them assembled in the team bus with new spirit for going to the ground to face a bright new challenge of a bright new day. Hardik and Yuzvendra as usual started their fun interview of Chahal TV to lighten everyone’s mood while going to the ground. Virat soon cheered with all these and was smiling. Shikhar sung, “Mere do anmol ratan ek h Ram duja dooja Lakhan”, pointing Mahi Bhai and Virat making both of them smile. Then Hardik and Yuzvendra went to Rohit to tease him. Yuzvendra started asking him questions of history and Rohit was going on scratching the back of his head.
They all reached the Sophia Gardens ground Virat hugged Mashrafe and he hugged him back. Both of them wished each other luck for the upcoming match. Their was a little rain in the ground. They had the toss. Commentators, “India started their World Cup campaign on a rather poor note as they lost their warm up game against New Zealand by six wickets. On a track that offered consistent movement off the pitch up front, most of the Indian batsmen struggled to negate the conditions. On a positive note, Jadeja accumulated a fifty lower down the order. It also has to be observed that in all likelihood tracks for the World Cup wouldn't offer considerable seam movement.”
TOSS - Bangladesh opt to bowl. India too would have bowled in conditions Kohli said was similar to that of the first game. The Indians are playing 14 with Kedar Jadhav still in the recovery phase. However, Vijay Shankar is back and will feature in today's game.
Drizzle- Right, we might actually not have a prompt start. It has started to drizzle and the covers have been brought out. Cardiff and rain? The last match here - Bangladesh v Pakistan - was a washout. The forecast though is better for today.
Covers removed- There is some good news coming in as the rain has relented and the covers are being taken off. You could see a hint of movement off the pitch with some moisture around. Rohit and Dhawan have come out to the middle. Interesting to see how they would handle tricky conditions.
Stop-start- One of those days where you will get play on a stop-start basis. The covers have been removed again. And the players are back. Our man in Cardiff, Kaushik Rangarajan chips in, "A very relaxed atmosphere here. You would think Dhawan and Rohit have just scored 100s because at least 7-8 Bangladesh fielders have just walked over to shake their hands before the start of the game."
Mustafizur strikes- Mustafizur has dislodged Dhawan. The left-armer generated a hint of swing in his second over and troubled Dhawan. Eventually, the southpaw got his front pad too far across and was trapped in front. Last year, Anderson and Broad had targeted Dhawan's weakness from round the wicket in Tests.
Edged and four- Kohli edges one through the slip cordon and it runs away to the boundary hoardings. It swung a bit to produce the edge but there was a gap between the 'keeper and the wide slip and it scurried away.
Kohli, Rohit navigate through- Kohli and Rohit cracked a couple of well-timed shots to get things back on track. And the duo seems to have navigated through the tricky conditions early on.
Rohit dislodged- Well, against the run of play, Rohit was dismissed by Rubel. He tried to pull a short delivery but could only drag it back onto the stumps. It was there to be pulled but Rohit couldn't get it via the middle of the bat.
Dream wicket- Huge blow... Saifuddin has castled Kohli with a well-directed yorker. The ball dipped quite a bit and Kohli played around it and it deflected via his pad and onto the stumps. Saifuddin is rightly over the moon. And he does an army-like salute in celebration!
KL Rahul (108) and MS Dhoni (113) compiled sparkling tons while the spinners ran through Bangladesh's batting order to ensure India's thumping 95-run victory in their second and final warm-up game ahead of the World Cup. Bangladesh could muster only 264 in pursuit of 360.
While chasing down a substantial target, Bangladesh needed a blazing start to mount a challenge. The duo of Liton Das (73) and Soumya Sarkar provided the Asian nation a solid platform. The highlight of the 49-run stand was the scorching pull stroke essayed by Liton off India's spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah. Just when the duo seemed set to stitch a sizeable stand, Bumrah forced Sarkar to edge on behind. Incidentally, the seamer had troubled the southpaw right through his opening spell with the away-going angle and finally his persistence was rewarded.
Bumrah then produced a ripper of a yorker to castle Shakib Al Hasan. The fast bowler snapped his wrist and got it to dip sharply on Shakib to shatter the timber. At that juncture, Mushfiqur Rahim (90) and Liton steadied Bangladesh's innings with a diet of singles an twos and the occasional boundary. Once the pair put on a 50-run stand, they also looked to accelerate.
The partnership soon crossed the 100-run mark and for a while, it looked as if Bangladesh would put up a decent fight. However, Chahal broke the promising alliance by tempting Liton to skip down the track with a tossed up delivery only to be stumped. Liton's wicket opened the floodgates as the spin twins - Kuldeep and Chahal - picked up a slew of wickets to leave Bangladesh eight down. Mohammad Saifuddin and Mehidy Hasan landed a few blows but by then the result was a foregone conclusion. Eventually, they were bundled out in the final over.
The architects of India's clinical victory were Dhoni and Rahul. When Dhoni joined Rahul in the middle, India were in a spot of bother at 102 for 4 in the 22nd over. The trio of Mustafizur Rahman, Saifuddin and Rubel Hossain had extracted enough movement off the pitch to trouble India's top order and make regular incisions. Rahul and Dhoni, however, decided to counterattack to put the pressure back on Bangladesh's bowlers. Dhoni took on Shakib and deposited the ball into the stands in the 25th over. Rahul joined in the act by collecting a couple of fours off Abu Jayed in the very next over.
Shakib came in for more punishment as Rahul and Dhoni tonked the bowler for two boundaries and a six in the 31st over. By then, Bangladesh's bowlers seemed to have lost the discipline as the pair of Rahul and Dhoni pressed the accelerator pedal. Rahul paddled through the nervous nineties quickly with a six off Mustafizur and completed his ton in the very next over bowled by Sabbir Rahman. Once Rahul was dismissed by Mustafizur, Dhoni and Hardik Pandya took over with a string of shots to power India past the 300-run mark. The way Dhoni cleared his front leg to thump Jayed into the stands to complete his century gave a glimpse of his pyrotechnics.
The Indian camp would be pleased with Rahul's hundred as the right-hander finds himself in pole position to bat at number four in the World Cup. The spin twins also gave a good account of themselves. Bangladesh will play their opening fixture of the World Cup on June 2 versus South Africa. India too would open their campaign with a game against South Africa on June 5.
