Chapter 4: A Change in Perspective

I woke up thinking it would be yet another boring day in the city.

This time, I was dead wrong.

I forced myself to climb out of the warm comfort that was my bed and get ready for the day. I got dressed in a simple light outfit. A form fitting shirt, a pair of my shorts, and my knee-high boots.

I brushed my hair, taking care to try and cover one of my eyes.

That was the one thing that I didn't like about myself.

I hated that my eyes were this bright green color. Everyone else in town had blue or brown eyes. They all look at me like I'm some kinda freak.

You think I'd have gotten used to it by now. I don't know what it is, seeing people judge me and they don't even know a thing about me..

It pisses me off.

It didn't matter much though, I still have some friends and it keeps the shitheads away from me.

After fixing my hair to what I thought was a semi-decent, I went over to my dresser and grabbed one of the only other thing my mother left me. A simple silver necklace in the shape of a rose.

My mother only left me three things, not all of which I'm grateful for. She left me my name, Elise Rose Cassidy, she left me my eyes, and she left me this little silver rose.

I sighed and put the necklace on and decided to walk outside for a bit.

One disadvantage of living in such a small village is that everyone knows everyone. Which can be a good thing, but in my case it was bad.

Since everyone thinks they know me, they usually give me a wide berth when I'm walking around.

Usually.

As I'm walking there is nobody in my way or beside me. Even behind me they stay back a couple of steps.

That is until one person walks straight toward me with a sneer on his face. I already knew who it was, Sabjorn Vendrik.

Sabjorn falls under what I like to call major shithead status.

Sabjorn slowed down so that he would block me under one of the arcs that lead into the building where we hold class.

He stuck one arm across the section, "Hey baby! When are you and me goin' on that date?" he asked with that stupid sneer on his face.

I put a hand on my chin in fake thought, "Well tomorrow's the 22nd so... Never."

I tried to pass when Sabjorn put a hand on my shoulder, "You're gonna say yes one of these days brighteyes!"

I put one hand on Sabjorn's wrist, "If you like this hand, I suggest you take it off my shoulder."

Sabjorn let go and moved out of my way. I was almost inside when I heard, "You're gonna pay for this, brighteyes!"

I waved off his attempt at a threat, "Yeah, yeah, yeah!"

I walked into class and saw the two people in the village who didn't totally hate my guts, Lilliana and Vira.

Lilliana and Vira were the two people I could count on to not stab me in my back.

Lilliana was a taller darker skinned falpier. Her hair was black but her eyes were a greenish color. She was the type to speak less and do more.

Vira on the other hand was halfling with bright red hair and brownish eyes. She was the type to make friends and not enemies.

Vira smiled, "Elise! C'mon saved ya a seat!" She patted the spot next to her.

I smiled and sat next to them, "Hey guys."

Lilliana nodded and Vira nudged me, "So? Are ya ready?"

I did a quick mental checklist and couldn't remember missing anything, "Ready for what?"

Vira sighed, "The assignment Granny gave to you!"

My face must have shown that I couldn't remember what she was talking about because Lilliana spoke up, "The caravan escort assignment."

I slapped myself, "Oh yeah!"

Vira nodded, "Yeah! Are you ready?"

I shrugged my shoulders, "I guess so. I mean, what's so special about walking with some caravaneers who've been doing this their whole lives?"

Lilliana shot a glance at me and went back to her book while Vira wore a look of shock, "'What's so special'? I'll tell you 'what's so special'! You'll be the first out of all of us to set foot outside of the village since we were little!"

I shrugged again, "So? We're all gonna go outside again at some point."

Lilliana set her book on the table and looked over at me, "You're getting to leave the village. This is a huge step up in responsibility here in the village. This is a great honor, don't downsize it or fuck it up."

Vira jerked a thumb towards Lilliana, "What she said!"

I was just about to give me retort when the teacher for all the kids our age, Ms. Einthrope, walked in and demanded our attention and silence.

She cleared her throat and began a long speech on the history and importance of us being allowed to leave the village.

Vira leaned over and whispered, "Oh yeah, Granny Chio wants to talk to ya after class!"

Ms. Einthrope's voice rang over the class, "Miss Rose, Miss Falano. Do you want to share what you're talking about?"

Me and Vira both shook our heads said, "No ma'am." At the same time.

"Good," she put a piece of her white hair behind her ear, "Now, in light of the first student going outside the walls, you will all be released early."

Cheers and excited murmurs ran through class as we all began to stand up and leave.

As me, Vira, and Lilliana exited the class I put my arms around the necks of the two of them, "So, you guys wanna head to Granny Chio's with me? Lunch is on me if ya do!"

Vira smiled, "Sounds good, but I gotta pass. I'm gonna go see if there's any interesting things at the hatchery today."

I shook her shoulder a little, "Aww, maybe next time. How 'bout you Lilliana?"

Lilliana shook her head, "The book store's gotten a new shipment. I need to get there and check if they got any new books on runes."

I let a small frown touch my lips, "Damn. Oh well! I'll see you guys later at the usual place though, right?"

Lilliana nodded her head and Vira grinned, "Totally!"

I laughed a little, "Okay then, see ya!"

We all began to head our seperate ways. I headed down one of the main streets, since it was after the morning rush most of everyone was gone.

I walked down the street and thought that someone was staring at me, I turned around and looked down the streets. Just like before, no one was there.

I shrugged and continued on my way to Granny Chio's.

I knew most of the side streets in this town like the back of my hand, so I went down an alley that would get me to Granny's as quickly as possible.

As soon as I entered the shadows of the alley I felt two pairs of hands grab me and slam me against the wall.

I couldn't tell who the people were in the darkness of the alley but when I felt the breath of someone in my ear and heard the voice, I knew exactly who it was.

"Hello brighteyes." Sabjorn spoke into my ear.

I looked over his shoulder and saw one of his shithead buddies blocking the quickest way out of the alley, not like it mattered, I could barely breath, let alone run out of here without a fight.

I tried to get the air back into my lungs but it just seemed like no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't breathe.

Sabjorn smiled cruelly, "You know you have a nice body brighteyes," He said as he groped my breasts.

I'm not sure how I managed to get my strength back but I stomped my foot down as hard as I can on his toes, as he bent over in pain I bashed my head into his nose.

Sabjorn's friend came over to stop me and he simply placed one finger on his forehead and unleashed a savage amount of mana, blasting him back and deeper into the alley.

I turned back to Sabjorn, "You groped me... You groped me! You had the nerve to grope me!?" I asked as I lit my hands with mana again.

"You need to be punished. See you in the infirmary." I raised my hand to finish him off I felt a hand on my shoulder.

I turned to see that the hand belonged to a small frail old women with her long silver hair in a braid, "Granny Chio?"

Granny Chio smiled, "Now Elise you know we can't go around just using magic like that."
