The next couple of classes were normal except for lunch. My friends started talking about the school formal they had for Year 12. They were planning to go together if someone didn't have a date. I nodded, just for the sake of not going with Asher. After school, like I promised Ash, I brought my karate clothes and headed off to the dojo again. Once I was dressed and warmed up, Matt said, "Hey Catherine, there is someone new I would like you to verse." A girl with her hazel brown eyes narrowed down to slits stepped forward. We bowed, and it was only then did I notice her belt, the same colour as mine. "Her name is Olivia."
"Nice to meet you," I said coolly.
"You too," she said. Her voice sounded like the rattle of a thousand snakes. Suddenly I knew I would have to watch out for her. A voice inside my head screamed, "She could be the leak! She could be the leak!"
Matt signaled for us to start, and exactly the opposite as yesterday, Olivia attacked me first. She was like a tornado, plus a few good kicks and strikes. I calmly blocked all her attacks, and then tried a spinning kick at her leg. She blocked it easily and continued her torrent towards me. Oh. Well, she was better than I thought. I blocked her blows again then leaped into a double spinning kick, aiming at her chest and shoulders. Only it didn't turn out that way. I guess I was being a little lazy because the first kick landed right on her chest, but I jumped too high on the next and got her right in the jaw. I heard her scream and stopped immediately.
"Oh my gosh, are you okay?"
"Does it look like I'm okay?" she hissed back, only loud enough for me to hear. A little blood trickled from the corner of Olivia's mouth. I drew back, surprised by her menace. Matt rushed over and propped her up on his knee. "Olivia! You're okay right?"
Olivia went back to her weak act and fell into Matt's arms. "Oh, ow, my head hurts really badly." I make a face at her, obviously knowing she was faking. "Matt!" Olivia pointed at me suddenly. "She kicked me hard, now she makes faces at me. It’s not fair!" She sobs as everyone's heads turned to me, catching me in the act.
"I never knew you were like this, Catherine," Matt accused me. I put my hand over my mouth, speechless.
"I'm sorry, Olivia," I said softly.
She mouthed the words 'you better be' at me. I looked at her, tears forming in my eyes. Everyone was crowded around her, comforting her and petting her hair. I stumbled backwards, and as I do, I see Asher's eyes for a second. I am not sure what emotions were in them, but I'm pretty sure it was anger and accusation. I ran out of the room and straight to my dorm. I flung myself on my bed, slamming the door behind me. I closed my eyes and took a deep ragged breath, letting out a few tears.
Then I let it all out. Bursting into tears, I screamed into my pillow until my throat was hoarse and cried until my eyes felt red and swollen. After around half an hour, I was done. I felt empty and lonely, angry and depressed. I walked into the bathroom and splashed water on my face. I looked like a train wreck- sweaty hair everywhere, eyes swollen, and face red. I was a mess. Slowly, I got myself back together- combing my hair, putting a little make up on, taking a shower. When I'm done, it’s eight. I follow the routine from yesterday, and then went to bed, tired.
The next day Ash isn't there, so I ate breakfast and walked to class alone. Everywhere I went, I got mean stares from girls whispering about me. Mostly I just glared at them back, but on the inside I was crumbling. I felt like a criminal, a thief, a murderer. When I went to class, I sat at a different spot, away from everybody. After about five minutes of complete loneliness, Bonnie cautiously came over to me and asked, "Did you kick Olivia in the face yesterday?"
"Yes, but-" She had walked off without letting me finish my sentence. The teacher walked in and we stood behind our chairs. Once we were seated, Mrs. Hazel came over to my desk and said the principal had to see me at period one. I nodded wondering what she would want with me. When I entered the office, even the people there seemed to look at me like I was a rabid animal. I couldn't exactly stare at them like I did with the other girls, so I just strode past with my chin held high. I asked one of the ladies if I could see the principal, and she just said to wait on the couch. When Mrs. Hawke finally called me in, my legs were stiff. I half waddled over to the chair she offered me and sat down with a sigh. Looking at her now, I cannot imagine her as an agent. She looked like a principal, with a black suit and small glasses.
"Hello Catherine, my name is Mrs. Hawke and yes, I am your mother’s friend."
I shake her hand and politely and continue to listen. "Now I heard that you had a little run in with Olivia James yesterday. What was all the about?"
"Well, we were in the dojo, and Matt said for me to verse Olivia. So we started and my first attack she defended. Then I tried to do something a little harder. I meant to hit her on the chest and shoulder, but on the second jump, I jumped too high and got her in the jaw."
"So it was completely an accident? Olivia said she caught you making faces at her after the incident."
"After I accidentally kicked her I said sorry but then she said you better be. Then she did a fake act and was pretending she was hurt. That's why I made a face." Then I decided to be a little bolder. "Why is she so important anyway? It was only a small scratch. The kick was actually pretty soft."
Mrs. Hawke leaned back in her chair a little and sighed. "Catherine, Olivia’s parents are both very rich. Her dad sues people as his job, and we could easily go broke if they did. Therefore, Olivia is a very special student at this school."
I wrinkled my nose. "Hm."
"Remember what I said about lying low? Well, please do that and I suggest you go to Olivia immediately and apologize."
"Yes, Miss. I stood up slowly, scooped up my bag and walked out glumly. That completely explained Olivia’s smug behavior and drama queen character. It was now second period- Drama. Yay! One of my favorite subjects. I loved putting on another face and pretending to be someone else. It helped me to escape. I strode to drama class; Olivia would just very to wait. Once I got to the large room called J10, I knocked at it. And surprise surprise, who do you think opened it?
Olivia James, aka the rich girl.
