The day has taken a toll on poor Penelope. She worked as a firefighter, today by the grace if God there wasn't a huge fire but there were plenty of medical emergencies. Riding around Liverpool helping elderly people who injured themselves accidentally and young people who made bad decisions on purpose.
She had finally finished her shift, wishing good luck to the people on the night shift hopping in her car and racing back to her house unsure if she'd even make it to the bed, but her couch would suffice.
The key was in her door when her phone started ringing. A groan leaving her lips, could she not have any peace. She whispered "please don't be work" as she pulled the phone from her pocket without even checking the caller ID.
"Hello." She whined into her cellular, nudging the door open with her body and falling against it to close.
"Well hello to you too." The accent chuckled
"Oh my god, Jordan?" She froze in her tracks, smile on her face.
"Yeah- sorry am I interrupting something?" He asked a hint of amusement in his voice.
"Oh- no! Sorry I just got in the house from work, I'm exhausted." She admits with and unfaltering smile
"Oh, well I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe I shouldn't have called so soon, I just really wanted to talk to you." He nervously scratched his ear, teeth tugging at his bottom lip and he was so happy she couldn't see him.
"Aren't you sweet," She said as dropping herself on her couch "No I'm glad you called, I'm a big fan of your accent."
"Oh, is that the only reason?" He chuckled, "I guess I'll just have to call you every night then."
"You are such a smooth talker." She said pulling her boots off. "Anyway I'd like that."
"Good. Maybe tomorrow when you are little less exhausted, we can talk longer."
"Hopefully, yeah." She smiled even though he couldn't see her
"What do you do?" His interest peaked
"Im a firefighter. What do you do?" She asked surprising him
"Wow, I'm just a professional footballer." He answered
"Hmph, I win." She says
"I think we can both agree you're much cooler." He chuckled again. "What made you want to become a firefighter?" He asked interest peaked
"You mean why did I decide to put my life on the line everyday?" I clarified
"That's not how I worded it, but if that's the question you want to answer then by all means."
"It gives me purpose." She answers the best she knows how
"I think you're selling yourself short." He said and Penelope could feel her cheeks and neck heating up from the blush spreading up her body.
"And you? Why'd you become a footballer?" She retaliated her voice sweet
"Well I've always wanted to be a football player."
"How lucky are you to be living your dream?" She asked even though it was rhetorical
"Pretty lucky I'd say." He said and she could hear the smile in his voice
"Yeah me too. I'm gonna go now, before I fall asleep on you."
"Good night, then." He said and she took in the sound of his voice for a second
"Good night" she smiled as they both hung up
"This man is too good to be true." She whispered to herself before getting in the shower and heading to bed.
The next morning she woke up in a surprisingly good mood, getting dress and having breakfast. She headed for work. She was in the midst of changing into her uniform when her phone pinged.
