A few moments later, we were pulling into my favorite drive-in, Sonic. Olivia turned and looked at me wistfully.
"Is this place ok Brie?" she asked worriedly.
"Olivia, it's fine."
Much like you
"This is my favorite place to eat after practice. I love the powerade slushies." I said with all the reassurance i could find.
"Really?? Me too! Mom says that eating here so much is bad but when she gets one of their burgers she says..."
Olivia motioned to her mom who sighed with defeat and said
"Eat what you want because once you die, it'll never taste the same."
This was true, so when I made up my mind on what to order, I got two of the biggest burgers they sold, a large fry and a large powerade slushy.
We hopped out of the car to sit at the picnic tables outside, but Mrs. Lisa stayed in the car and ate.
When i asked what that was about, Olivia said that her mom probably had to run an errand or two and would come back later.
Right when she said that, Mrs. Lisa pulled out without saying good bye, and Olivia sighed sharply.
"Your Mom seems pretty cool", I said smiling.
"She seems more tentative and caring than my mom."
Olivia looked at me with saddened eyes then defensively and sternly stated "I doubt that."
This was the first time she looked at me without a smile. It felt wierd, as if I were going blind..
"What do you mean?" I asked with peaking curiosity.
"I'll spare you the drama Brie, I didnt invite you to lunch to tell you about my problems."
"Then why did you invite me?"
She looked at me with a smug grin and then flatlined her lips when she noticed her smile.
"You just seemed a little upset that your mom had bailed, and I know how bad it sucks. You shouldnt be left alone. " She said with some strange shimmering gem of genuine-ness.
"Olivia you hardly know me though, how could you even think to care about me?"
She bit her lip and just shrugged her shoulders.
Quite an unsettling yet adorable answer..
Our large meal was then deliviered to us and we ravenously tore through the wrappers to get to our unhealthy meals.
A large slice of tomato fell out of the bottom of Olivia's burger, and she jokingly stuck her tongue out.
"Yuck! Tomatoes are so nasty!" She said as she picked it up and threw it at me.
Olivia released a loud cackle as it stuck to my forehead like a sticker in a child's coloring book.
I smirked and threw a few fries like darts at her untill she became a master at swatting them away.
It did not occur to me untill i had finished my plethera of gourmet Sonic meals, and Olivia making me laugh so hard that my slushy squirted out through my nose, that I was finally hungry again..
