I turn to him in surprise. Brian visibly swallows, his cheeks still bright red.
"I can help with that," he says softly, almost so quiet I can't hear him.
I smile and turn my back to him. I hand him the necklace and move my hair over my shoulder. I watch Brian in the dressing room mirror as he drapes the jewelry over my neck daintily. His fingers are warm as they lightly brush against my upper back, trying to hook the ends together. It takes him a couple of seconds, his face twisted in an adorable, confused frown. I feel the metal finally seal, and he lets go, letting the necklace loose.
"Got it," he says proudly, although his face reads bashfulness.
I can't help the massive smile that crosses my face. I turn around to face him. Thank you, I sign.
Brian shuffles on his feet a little. "Umm... you're welcome?" He asks in a questioning tone.
I nod and give him a light rub on the shoulder. He clears his throat, "The dress is nice, you know? It's a pretty color."
How sweet of him! I honestly did not expect him to stay after putting on the necklace.
"Blue is my favorite color, actually," he continues, rubbing his neck. "Blue is the symbol of trust, intelligence and faith."
I raise an eyebrow, making a facial expression of surprise and interest. Before Brian could continue, Roger walks by, stopping as he found Brian. "Hey, oh, wow!" He says, looking at me. "That's a nice dress."
I nod in thanks, suddenly feeling a little underdressed.
"Hell, it's so dark in here," Roger says, walking over to the light switch on the wall. "How can you see anything?"
Oh no! But before I could stop him, he flicks it on, putting the light back to its original glow. I immediately cross my arms over my chest, hoping that neither of them could see that I was braless. I'm pretty sure Brian knew and that's already a little embarrassing. But maybe there was a slight chance that he didn't see. Roger realizes his mistake and backs out quickly.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to. Umm Brian, Fred wanted to see you about... something," Roger said weakly, before yanking the lanky man away.
"But I, bye Genevieve!" I hear Brian call out.
Well, so much for talking to him more. I roll my eyes and look in the mirror. The necklace is perfect. I put my hand over it, feeling the cool metal against my skin. A knock on the wall beside me sounds and I go to pull the curtain back. It's Mary holding an armful of clothes.
"Oh, that necklace looks perfect!" She gushes, walking in and setting the clothes on the chair. "Brian really knew what he was doing."
Brian picked it? I signed in surprise and almost disbelief.
Mary nods. "Yes, when I told him I was looking for a necklace for you, he immediately started a search for one."
But Mary is not turned to me. She seems distracted and trying to make herself busy with the clothes. I think she is lying to me. Ah, that's rude of me to assume so but, her body language just screams untruthful. Maybe that was why Brian was so nervous seeming when he came to me. Or was he being shy again? I don't know, I think I need to drop it. But, I can't help analyzing these sorts of things. I'll drop it, after all, I got a chance to see Brian again.
Mary turns around to me. "I brought this jumpsuit and two blouses that I think would look very smashing on you. I have to start assisting other customers now, but Jo is outside and she would love to help."
I smile. Thanks, Mary, I really appreciate this. Truly, I do.
Mary smiles, almost shyly. "It's not a problem." She pauses a moment, looking at the floor before meeting my eyes again. "Actually, don't tell anyone else that I said this but, everyone is really curious to know more about you. Fred has mentioned about inviting you over tonight and playing this game called 21 questions."
