I had been captured at the window. Alan had known we were coming, despite our best efforts. And while Mairen was away, looking for a weapon, he tied me up and put me in a cage. And made a trap of his own. Swirling ebony magic erupted from an amulet around his neck, and it encased him. When it faded, a mirror image of myself sat before me. It laughed in my voice.

"You were foolish to try and come after me. And with you out of the way, Mairen will be so much easier to capture. Or kill. Whatever suits the moment, I guess. Good luck getting out of there." I could only watch as Alan exited the room, a wolf in sheep's clothing. Or hawk's clothing, I guess. I was left to listen as Mairen fell for his ruse. And I couldn't help her. I could only hope that she could figure it out on her own, and get out of there before he killed her.
