Several years later...
I'm sitting in my study as I continue to write up the last of my patient notes. I've been snowed it with work but I'm nearly done. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, which is great. Being one of the best vets in Los Angeles sure does come with its fair share of paperwork. I'm trying my best to get through the final stretch but sometimes, my mind cuts off and I forget what I need to write. It's the biggest pain in the ass. I've been able to pump out a bit but right now I've hit a dead spot. But to be fair, I have been working on this for a good few hours now so I'm probably in need of a break.
I start finishing off this last paragraph when I hear a faint knock on my door and I know exactly who it is.
"Come in!" I answer then smile when I see my little Anna open the door and walk into my study. "Hello, Anna Banana!"
"Hi, mommy," she beams, walking over to me.
Anna is so damn cute. She looks so much like Beca it's unreal. She's got her eyes, her hair, her nose, and her smile. She's gorgeous and I can tell she's going to be gorgeous when she grows up.
"I brought you something," she says.
"Oh, yeah?"
"Yeah," Anna reaches me and hands me one of her little cookie packets.
"Thank you, Anna! I was getting a bit hungry."
"That's okay. Are you still working?"
"I am," I answer, putting the cookies on my desk.
"Oh, okay. Mama says I can't stay long."
She makes me laugh. "That's okay, Ann. I won't be too much longer. When I'm done, we can play."
"Okay, mommy."
"Thank you for my cookies."
"That's okay."
"Come here," I lean down and open up my arms where Anna smiles and hugs me. "Love you."
"Love you, too, mommy." Anna pulls away, pecks my cheek, and leaves the room.
I love that kid so much. She looks so much like Beca but she acts so much like me and I'm reminded that she is indeed my daughter. I couldn't be prouder as a mother.
"Knock, knock?" I hear my wife on the other side of the door.
"Come in!"
Beca opens the door and walks through the door with a mug in her hand.
"I brought you a coffee," she tells me.
"Thank you, baby. You're the best wife ever. Bring it over here."
Beca smiles and walks over to me, placing the mug down on my desk. When Anna was born, Beca and I instantly started dating. We fell more and more in love with each other every day and Anna seemed to have made us closer because, after about a year of dating, I proposed to Beca. I was scared that she was going to say no since I remember her saying that she wasn't the marrying kind but thankfully, she said yes. Since we didn't want to waste unnecessary time, we got married two months later and we've been together ever since. Marrying Beca was the best decision of my life.
"How's it going?" Beca asks, looking at my computer screen.
"Not bad. I got more done than I did yesterday. I'm almost done."
"That's great!"
"Yeah, it is. Come here and tell me if this last part makes sense." I pull Beca onto my lap where she leans forward and reads the part I've highlighted for her.
